"Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year" is here.

I chose this song because I loved the melody. I had no idea it was from a vintage holiday movie. Frank Loesser's 1943 ballad “Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year” was first heard in the Deanna Durbin film “Christmas Holiday” and I tend to associate Loesser to all the fun, savvy songs of “Guys & Dolls”. This, to me, must be one of his most quietly affecting works. The melody has these deep low notes that are maybe the lowest I’ve ever sung. (Low notes feel very intense somehow.) The lyric is full of the hesitations of someone waiting for emotional spring to return. We all know that during this season, love can fray and unravel. (I know a few people who are going through a version of breaking up.)

So, it’s not about weather, but our inner weather: where hopes falter — and renewal delays. Tenderness survives the chill… we look for inner strength.

Today, we release three songs that, for me, are a perfect example of the “grown-up” American songbook. Each song a loop in the obstacle course run by adults.

One song can’t quite find the definition for love- it’s an ever changing weather, “But Beautiful” (1947). The second for people who stay up late “Dancing On The Ceiling” (1930). (If I were a prissy professor, I would helpfully say ‘classroom, this song is an erotic metaphor.’)

And remind me to remind you to please check out “Remind Me” (1940) my absolute favorite song on the album. Dorothy Fields makes me laugh out loud. Jerome Kern (whose work Sondheim loved) winds around her mischievous message.

I hope you’ll enjoy embracing the American songbook with me.

Here we go! Official Music Video! This is a song from the 1940s by Matt Dennis and is one of the 3 most classic saloon songs, like “One For My Baby” or “Something Cool.” I chose this one because it has the most poetic breadth to it, has so much of the beautiful enigma of a film noir. Who’s left? Who’s there? Who is number one? Who is disappearing where? The verse is rarely sung & speaks piercingly to the moment we are in right now.
When I first learned it, my heart was in a knot. It seems a lot of us feel that way these days.
