Saint Michael Parish is a Roman Catholic community located in Olympia, WA. Our mission is to place God first in all things, to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to grow in holiness through prayer, sacraments, and service.
There is a moment — when a soldier steps forward knowing what lies ahead — that time itself seems to hold its breath.
We call today Memorial Day. But "memorial" means more than memory. It means witness. It means we were here, and we will not forget what was done for us.
The Church has always understood sacrifice not as defeat, but as the highest expression of love. Every one of us is called to lead lives that are sacrificial, selfless, and wholly self-giving — courageously and completely laying our lives down for others, imitating the Good Shepherd's commitment to His flock. The men and women we honor today answered that call in the most total way imaginable.
In the words of St. Francis of Assisi: "Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received, only what you have given: a full heart enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage."
They gave that full heart. Every last beat of it.
So today, before the barbecue, before the ballgame, before another moment passes — stop. Look up. Give thanks. And pray.
Eternal Father, receive the souls of those who fell in service to others. Grant them the peace of Your presence, and grant us the grace to be worthy of their sacrifice. Amen.
