Recent expedition. It was a very long journey on foot to this location. I typically start off in the early hours of the morning. I saw this Lucky CareBear laying in a parking lot. I felt sorry for him and stuffed him in my old hunting vest. He is now quite content in his new home, as you can see. Countless beautiful sunrises and moonstruck nights await him. đ đđ
We were able to view the eclipse at Kaskaskia State Park, overlooking the site of the sunken early Illinois State Capital and ancient French Village. Traffic and crowds seemed twice what they were in 2017, and this site was chosen instead of the Devilâs Backbone / Grand Tower further south. This ultimately turned out for the best, as I succeeded in returning the State House relic walking staff to itâs place of origin. Just as importantly, by chance I met the new Park Ranger administrating / caretaking this among other sites. It was refreshing to see a young person native to the area who is passionate and very knowledgeable about the history serving in that capacity. The spot Iâm standing overlooking the river was packed with telescopes, cameras and people about an hour prior to that photo.
If all goes as planned, we are conducting an expedition south along the Mississippi River, to a special undisclosed location at which to experience the Great Solar Eclipse of 2024. We are retracing our steps of earlier scouting operations, into a largely forgotten valley of ancient evil spirits, lost treasure and cataclysmic events. Weâll also be unveiling an extremely historically significant relic, and sharing itâs incredible journey. Stay tuned!
Comparison of an artifact found relic hunting and an original in pristine condition that was never in the ground. This is the predominant rifle ammunition used by the U.S. army in the period following the Civil War. The .45-70 cartridge was used in the âTrapdoorâ Springfield breech loading rifle. I personally found the fired bullet and empty casing at an old army post. You can see the base where the firing pin dented the center. These had internal primers, unlike modern cartridges. The nondug specimen has a visible headstamp with the year (18)78, and âFâ for Frankford Arsenal. Civil War veterans reunion badge, turn of the century. Constructed of celluloid shell over a tin backing, this pinback badge is mounted within an ornate stamped brass frame. This type of configuration was very popular at the height of the gilded age.
For many decades after the end of the Civil War, veterans organizations such as (primarily) the Grand Army of The Republic frequently held parades, meetings and encampments throughout the U.S. This organization was quite large and held considerable political influence. This combined with the elaborate styles of the era resulted in a vast array of medals, pins and other regalia.
Although I do not collect this category of memorabilia, I nonetheless decided to keep this particular piece because itâs so colorful and full of character.
