Who will win one of our Top 6 prizes? To enter, kids simply submit a drawing, a Scratch project, or any coding creation answering the question: βIs AI a hero or a villain?β
ποΈ Deadline: January 31
Wondering if itβs worth participating? Every child who enters receives a Science Robotics Kit and even more importantly, they walk away with creativity, confidence, and skills that last a lifetime. Thank you to the Dan Bailie Fund at Calgary Foundation for supporting these prizes through Grant #20263827. Weβre grateful for your commitment to empowering young creators. π
Want a fun way for your kids to learn how to use AI wisely? Try the #AIFamilyRecipeChallenge! Ask AI to remix a family recipe β cook it β share what surprised you. This is a fun way for kids to learn how to ask good questions, evaluate AI results, and make thoughtful decisions with technology.
HOW TO ENCOURAGE YOUR KID TO PARTICIPATE (3 EASY STEPS)
Getting your child excited about the YesWeCode Hackathon doesn't require tech expertiseβjust curiosity and conversation. Here's your simple game plan:
After watching, ask them: "So, what do you think? Is AI a superhero or a supervillain?"
Then LISTEN. Really listen. Don't correct or guideβjust let them think out loud.
Follow-up questions: - "What made you think that?" - "Can you give me an example?" - "Have you used AI today? Where?" - "If you could build something with AI, what would it be?"
WHY IT WORKS: You're not lecturingβyou're exploring together. This makes them feel smart and valued.
WHAT TO EXPECT: - Ages 8-10: Might give simple answers ("It's good because it helps doctors") - Ages 11-13: May have strong opinions ("It's bad because of fake videos") - Ages 14-15: Could surprise you with nuanced thinking ("It depends on who builds it")
All answers are valid! The point is they're THINKING.
Here's where you transition from conversation to creation:
"You know what? There's a challenge where you can show your answer! You could draw it, code it, or build something. And you might win a tablet or headset. Want to check it out?"
Let THEM explore the site together with you: β Look at example projects (inspiration) β Watch tutorial videos (builds confidence) β Pick their format (art, Scratch, or code)
WHY IT WORKS: When they feel ownership ("I chose to do this"), they're more motivated than if you signed them up.
KEY PHRASES THAT WORK: β "Want to try?" (gives them choice) β "No pressureβjust for fun" (removes stress) β "I'll help you" (offers support) β "You could win something cool" (adds excitement)
PHRASES TO AVOID: β "You should do this" (feels like homework) β "It'll look good for college" (too distant for 8-15 year olds) β "Everyone's doing it" (creates pressure)
π― REMOVE BARRIERS: "Don't worryβyou don't need to be good at coding. You can draw!" "We have the whole month of January. No rush." "It's completely freeβno credit card, nothing."
π― MAKE IT FUN: "Let's brainstorm ideas together this weekend." "Want to make it a family project? I'll help with research." "Maybe we can show grandma/grandpa your finished project!"
π― RESPECT THEIR "NO": If they're not interested, don't force it. Maybe say: "That's okay! If you change your mind, it's open all January."
π EVERYONE WHO SUBMITS GETS: - Certificate of completion - LittleLitAI discount code - Pride in creating something meaningful
π‘ REAL LEARNING OUTCOMES: - Critical thinking about technology - Creative problem-solving - Confidence in their abilities - Understanding of AI ethics
Why the Rich Get Richer & the Poor Stay Poor β The Truth About Economic Inequality
Weβre often told that hard work leads to success. But if that were true, why do so many hardworking people struggle to make ends meet while the wealthy continue to build fortunes? Traditional capitalism, rising income inequality, and a rigged system make it harder for lower-income families to move up. #WealthGap#EconomicInequality#FairWages#SocialMobility#FixTheSystem#FinancialJustice

STEP 1: START WITH SHARED LEARNING π₯
Watch this video together (it's only 1 minute!). Make popcorn, sit side-by-side, and learn about AI as a team.
WHY IT WORKS: When you learn alongside your child, they see you value the topic. Plus, you'll understand what they're exploring.
PRO TIP: Pause the video and ask, "Did you know that?" or "Have you noticed that?" throughout.
