An old video of South African pastor Paul Boshoff, founder of Christian Revival Church (CRC), has resurfaced online, sparking widespread debate locally and abroad. The clip, which recently gained traction on TikTok, shows Boshoff discussing leadership expectations within his church.

In the video, Boshoff speaks about loyalty in ministry, stating that he expects unwavering commitment from those who work closely with him. He suggests that disloyalty is unacceptable and recounts an instance where he removed someone from a leadership role after comments he interpreted as undermining authority. He further emphasised the importance of protecting church leadership.

The clip was reshared by an overseas TikTok user, drawing international reactions and reigniting conversations among South Africans about power dynamics within churches. The footage quickly went viral, with social media users debating whether Boshoff’s remarks were taken out of context or reflective of deeper issues within certain religious institutions.

Some CRC members and supporters defended the pastor, arguing that the video lacked full context and that leadership in ministry requires strong unity and trust. Others, however, expressed concern about what they described as authoritarian tones, sharing personal experiences about church leadership and spiritual accountability.

The resurfaced clip has once again highlighted broader discussions about leadership, influence and transparency within megachurch structures. While opinions remain divided, the conversation underscores the powerful role social media plays in shaping public perception of religious leaders.

CRC has not issued a new public statement regarding the resurfaced footage.

The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training has called for the dismissal of Professor Srila Roy, head of the Sociology Department at the University of the Witwatersrand, following a controversial social media post in which she criticised what she described as South Africans’ “poor work ethic.”

Committee Chairperson Tebogo Letsie condemned the remarks as “unacceptable,” saying they were offensive, derogatory and undermined the dignity of many South Africans. He stressed that such views should not be associated with leadership in higher education and that serious consequences would be warranted if the allegations were substantiated.

Wits University has since placed Roy on precautionary suspension pending an investigation. The university has not yet made a final determination regarding her status. However, the Department of Sociology publicly distanced itself from the remarks, describing them as offensive, racist and indefensible.

In a statement, the department said the comments were inconsistent with its core values, including anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-classism and a commitment to equality and accountability. It further noted that the intensity of public reaction reflected the deep pain caused, particularly among Black South Africans.

Amid mounting criticism, the department requested that Roy step down as Head of Department, a request she has complied with. The parliamentary committee has welcomed the university’s swift action but emphasised that accountability must be decisive and transparent.

Letsie added that universities must remain spaces of dignity, fairness and transformation, warning that leadership positions cannot be held by individuals whose conduct is found to contradict these values.

Speculation is mounting that Patrice Motsepe, executive chairman of African Rainbow Minerals, may be positioning himself to contest the presidency of the African National Congress. The rumours intensified after Motsepe stepped down from his executive role at ARM, a company he founded.

Officially, however, the move follows amendments by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), which on 16 February 2026 tightened its listing requirements to align with global corporate governance standards. The new rules make it explicit that the chairperson of a listed company may not serve as an executive director.

ARM confirmed that Motsepe retired as executive chairman and employee of the company with effect from 16 February 2026, and will now serve as non-executive chairman to ensure compliance. In a note to shareholders, Motsepe said he looks forward to continuing to contribute to the company’s global competitiveness in his new capacity.

Behind the scenes, some ANC insiders have reportedly discussed Motsepe as a possible successor to President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is expected to step down as ANC president at the party’s national conference next year. Motsepe’s alleged campaign — informally referred to as “PM27” — has publicly been distanced from him, but supporters argue that his business track record, global networks and financial independence make him a strong contender.

Campaign backers point to his role as president of the Confederation of African Football, saying it reflects a broader pan-African vision. They also argue that his experience in job creation, governance and investment could help restore credibility and unity within a fractured ANC.

Political analysts, however, remain divided. Some question Motsepe’s political track record and warn that internal ANC leadership contests are often shaped more by financial backing and factional dynamics than grassroots support. For now, Motsepe’s transition at ARM remains officially tied to corporate governance compliance — but political speculation continues to grow.

Suspended Ekurhuleni Human Resources head Linda Gxasheka told the Madlanga Commission that she stormed out of a February 2023 meeting where the possible suspension of then-divisional director Julius Mkhwanazi was being discussed.

Gxasheka testified that she became concerned about her personal safety after being told during the meeting that Mkhwanazi was “very dangerous.” She said the discussion included security concerns, with then-acting metro police chief Rivo Spies having initiated an investigation into the alleged blue lights scandal.

Mkhwanazi has been implicated in allegedly facilitating the installation of blue lights on private vehicles linked to alleged crime figure Vusimuzi Matlala, and registering those vehicles under the City’s name. At the time, Mkhwanazi was in middle management but was later promoted to deputy chief of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), despite misconduct allegations.

Gxasheka told the commission she felt vulnerable after hearing that senior officials were increasing their own security measures. She said she raised concerns about her safety as a mother with a young baby and accused leadership of being indifferent to her fears. She initially refused to sign Mkhwanazi’s suspension letter but later co-signed the three-month suspension.

The commission also heard that when the suspension period lapsed, former city manager Imogen Mashazi allegedly instructed officials to lift the suspension due to delays in disciplinary proceedings. Mashazi has denied interfering in the process.

Mkhwanazi was eventually suspended again after the allegations resurfaced before the commission and is among individuals recommended in a preliminary report submitted to President Cyril Ramaphosa for possible criminal investigation. Gxasheka’s testimony continues.

The Madlanga Commission has condemned the unauthorised leak of a private communication between one of its senior investigators and controversial blogger Musa Khawula, warning that the disclosure undermines the integrity of its proceedings.

The commission confirmed that it is engaging the Presidency to request an extension of its mandate, citing the large volume of witnesses still expected to testify. The leak comes at a sensitive stage of the inquiry, which is probing allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system.

Khawula publicly referenced the message on X (formerly Twitter), tagging ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula and Ze Nxumalo, and suggesting that the two were involved in “lies and scheming”. He further implied that they would be confronted during commission proceedings.

According to the commission, the leaked message simply requested a phone call to discuss an unspecified matter. It stressed that all internal communications are confidential and that leaking such correspondence is strictly prohibited, as it compromises the credibility and independence of the inquiry.

The incident sparked widespread debate on social media, with users questioning Khawula’s role and influence in the commission’s work. Some expressed scepticism about commissions of inquiry in general, while others warned that political and personal agendas risk overshadowing the commission’s original mandate.

Despite the controversy, the Madlanga Commission reiterated its commitment to completing its work thoroughly and said it would continue engaging relevant authorities to ensure all outstanding testimony is heard.

Malawi-born preacher Shepherd Bushiri has strongly rejected findings by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) that his permanent residence permit in South Africa was irregularly approved. Bushiri insists that he lawfully invested more than R90 million in the country before being granted permanent residence.

The SIU previously reported that its investigation into the Department of Home Affairs, conducted under Proclamation 154 of 2024, found that Bushiri’s permit was approved by a Home Affairs adjudicator who was a member of his church. The unit flagged this as a potential conflict of interest and raised concerns about documentation submitted as part of the application.

Responding in a Facebook post, Bushiri denied any wrongdoing and said he did not apply for permanent residence from within South Africa. He claimed that his application was submitted through the South African Embassy in Malawi, long before he and his wife relocated permanently, and that no church member in South Africa assisted with the process.

Bushiri said his permit was granted under provisions that allow permanent residence for individuals who make substantial investments. He stated that the law requires investments of over R10 million and that by the time he applied, he had already invested more than R90 million in South Africa. “This was not a favour. It was not an exception. It was the law,” he said.

He also defended the immigration officer implicated in the SIU report, claiming the official was unfairly targeted simply for being a member of his church. Bushiri alleged that the officer was dismissed, mistreated and later died, and criticised claims made after the official’s death that he had admitted to issuing permits illegally.

The SIU has maintained that its findings form part of a broader investigation into maladministration and corruption within Home Affairs, with disciplinary steps already taken against several officials. The matter remains under investigation.

In a landmark judgment, the High Court of South Africa, Western Cape Division, has sentenced Ayanda Dayi to four life terms plus an additional 102 years of direct imprisonment for a series of brutal murders that terrorised parts of Cape Town.

The sentence was handed down at a circuit court sitting at the Wynberg Regional Court, following convictions linked to violent crimes committed in Delft and DuNoon in early 2024. The court found Dayi guilty on four counts of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, theft, and multiple firearm- and ammunition-related offences.

For the four murder convictions, the court imposed life imprisonment on each count. Additional sentences included 15 years for each robbery with aggravating circumstances, 10 years for attempted murder, and several years for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, bringing the total to an effective sentence of life imprisonment plus 102 years. Dayi was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Acting Judge Van Leeve described Dayi’s conduct as “extremely violent,” stating that he showed a complete disregard for human life and posed a serious danger to society. The court emphasised that violent crime has become alarmingly common in South Africa, particularly in Cape Town, and that the justice system must respond firmly to protect communities.

The convictions stem from two separate incidents. In May 2024, three men delivering bread in a Sasko truck were shot at point-blank range at a spaza shop in Symphony Way, Delft, killing two of them. Earlier, in January 2024, Dayi and an accomplice fatally shot Eric Yaphi and Elvis Thembelani Cwethiso in DuNoon before robbing them of a vehicle.

The National Prosecuting Authority said the sentence sends a clear message that violent crime will be met with severe consequences. Prosecutors also noted that the families of the victims have been left with lifelong trauma and loss, underscoring the devastating human cost of violent crime.

Political fixer Brown Mogotsi has begun his testimony before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, and it started with a shocking admission — he openly confessed to lying under oath to manipulate senior police officials.

Mogotsi, a North West businessman, appeared before the committee on 24 February 2026 as part of an investigation into alleged criminality, political interference, and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system. The committee was established following explosive claims made by Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi about criminal cartels operating within state institutions.

During proceedings, Mogotsi told MPs that he lied to one police colonel in order to obtain a Section 252A authorisation, which allows for undercover operations and surveillance. He claimed he falsely presented himself as a politician working in a minister’s office to secure the approval.

Once the authorisation was granted, Mogotsi said he recorded another police colonel, submitted the recording, had it transcribed, and then considered his task complete. He admitted the deception was deliberate and strategic, raising serious concerns about abuse of legal processes meant to fight crime.

This was not the first time Mogotsi acknowledged lying under oath. He previously made similar admissions during testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where he claimed that lying was justified because he was acting as a so-called “state agent.”

His latest confession sparked outrage and disbelief among South Africans online, with many questioning the credibility of witnesses, the value of sworn testimony, and whether there will be real consequences for those who admit to misleading Parliament under oath.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for facilitating the return of South African men who were caught up in the Russia–Ukraine war.

The group of 17 South Africans were allegedly lured to Russia under the impression that they would receive training as bodyguards for the uMkhonto weSizwe Party. Instead, they reportedly found themselves forced onto the war’s frontlines. Their ordeal came to light after the South African government received distress calls from the men.

The matter sparked national controversy, leading to the arrest of five individuals linked to the alleged recruitment scheme. Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former president Jacob Zuma, was also named as an alleged recruiter, a claim she has strongly denied.

On 20 February 2026, President Ramaphosa confirmed that four of the men had already returned home, with 11 more expected to arrive soon. Two remain in Russia, one of whom is receiving medical treatment in Moscow, while arrangements are being finalised for the other’s return.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the South African government worked closely with Russian authorities to secure the men’s release. He added that Ramaphosa personally thanked President Putin for responding positively and supporting the process of bringing the citizens home.

The development has triggered mixed reactions on social media, with some South Africans welcoming the diplomatic engagement, while others questioned accountability and called for stronger action against alleged recruitment networks operating within the country.
