At midnight, the phone rang.

On the other end was producer Jack Nitzsche. Across town at Sunset Sound, The Rolling Stones were recording a track called Gimme Shelter, but the song was missing its soul. Mick Jagger realized it didn't just need backing vocals—it needed a raw, haunting force of nature.

Merry didn't even know who the Stones were. Cold, exhausted, and wearing a silk nightgown and fur coat over her pajamas, she stepped into the vocal booth at 1:00 AM.

Jagger explained the apocalyptic theme of the track and pointed to a single line on the lyric sheet. Merry took a breath, stepped to the microphone, and unleashed pure fire:

"Rape, murder! It's just a shot away, it's just a shot away!"

On the second take, pushing her vocal cords far beyond human limits, her voice cracked under the sheer, desperate strain on the word "murder."
