Professionally created documentaries about heritage railways and transport

‘Rheilffordd' is the Welsh word for ‘Railway’, and encompasses our passions and curiosities, which explore the people and stories behind our railway and industrial heritage by visiting and getting up close to many working examples, riding aboard them and speaking with the passionate people behind it all. We pride ourselves on high-quality, professionally produced content and a lot of hours of production, research and editing goes into each video.

Our aim is to build a worldwide community of like minded transport enthusiasts, curious about railways, journeys and systems abroad, and we’d love to hear from you with any feedback and suggestions, leave a comment below or get in touch with us via our social media.

Hi everyone! Firstly.... today is the 86th Birthday of MV Curranulla, which operates the Bundeena Ferry, Australia's longest continuously operating public transport ferry service, and was the subject of our last video documentary.

And speaking of last video documentary.... yes it's been just over 6 months since our last video.... this is perfectly normal here at Rheilffordd for us to take months between videos. Editing and production have grind to a halt... of course, due to my real life being busy and getting in the way of the fun stuff like making YouTube videos.

Rest assured, we are slowly continuing editing of our videos, and hopefully at least busy out at least one upload... sometime this year... we hope!

(As we've said in the past, we care more about production quality and story telling, than we are about numbers, clout and other vanity metrics).

Hello! Welcome to the handful of new subscribers who I met recently at Don River Railway's spectacular Fifty Year Celebrations Event that took place last weekend, it was a blast and we were there filming for a future video, which will likely take months to produce because my life gets in the way of editing!

Anyhow, I have actually posted a 'highlights reel' of the weekend over on Rheilfford's Facebook page, just go there and search ‪@Rheilffordd‬ for the latest Don River Railway video. In the meantime, I highly suggest you go watch my friend Pannier Productions and his excellent video highlighting the events of the weekend.

Editing continues, albeit slowly, on our next production which we hope to get out in March. I realise taking my time slowly to 'perfect' a video can somewhat be counterintuitive to growing a YouTube channel.... I don't care.... I'm not in the game for vanity metrics and numbers, I just want to craft good videos and stories to share with you all about railway and transport topics I feel very closely with.

Anyhow, great to have met some of you in Tasmania recently. Thank you, and good day!

Hello! Here to wish you all a Merry Christmas, or in Welsh…. Nadolig Llawen! Won’t bore you with a long post about the past year and the…. four videos we released, lol.

Been a good year, didn’t grow big like many other channels did, got monetised though! Here’s hoping for actual progress and growth of the channel in the new year!

Thought I’d share a Christmas photo, here’s a photo of me aboard the recent Steamrail Victoria’s Members’ Christmas Party Weekender tour to Wycheproof….. it was a wild weekend!

Anyhow, enjoy what remains of 2024, see you in the near year, thank you and good day!

Hello! A warm welcome to all the new subscribers and viewers who have joined us after the Bundeena Ferry video.

This YouTuber thing is not easy, particularly when you work full-time in a “real” job and trying to maintain a life outside of that! This leaves me to do a lot of my post-production and editing while I’m on the road in my line of work.

Here I am set up in my hotel room in Perth to refine the scripting and record the voiceovers, and then editing the video while on a flight to Brisbane. Have to make use of all the idle time you have in a day/week to good use!

If you’re new here, welcome! Feel free to check out our other videos as well, and aside from that, thank you and good day!

Our newest video is now released! In this episode, we spend the day aboard Australia's oldest continously run public ferry service, which remarkably still operates with the same dedicated vessel that was built to service this very route. This is of course the Bundeena Ferry, plying the waters of Port Hacking between Cronulla and Bundeena, operated by the 1939 built vessel MV Curranulla!

A big thank you to the Cronulla and National Park Ferry Cruises family for having me aboard for the day to create this production, speak to them, speak to their passengers, and to create this piece celebrating the rich history of this maritime icon!

Hello! In a first for me, I make a brief cameo on another highly regarded YouTuber’s latest video! If you haven’t already, check out Martin Bennet’s (Aka, Taitset) latest video on the Flinders Street Viaduct, the busy section of railway between Melbourne’s Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations.

The footage he used I actually shot waaaayyyy back at the end of 2018, well and truly before my ambitions of starting Rheilffordd, I use to just post little vlogs on my personal Facebook page. I went to Melbourne and spent a night at this Airbnb, it wasn’t a Whole Place, but just an enclosed balcony covered up and converted into a spare room….. and it just happened to be located facing the inner curve of railway lines on the Flinders Street viaduct!

Being an enclosed balcony, noise insulation was virtually non-existent, particularly being located on a curve with the squealing of train wheels and also a set of points located nearby. And then there was the Long Island steel freight train rumbling through at 3am at night. The Airbnb has since been delisted sadly.

Anyhow, please, go watch Taitset’s video over here and enjoy! https://youtu.be/pySFwcT8SDw

Thank you and good day! 😁

Hello! A warm welcome to all our new subscribers and viewers who have come here from our “Australia’s Shortest Bus Route” video and also a recent ABC Australia article, which was about our mate Pete Michalak’s “The Hills Line In HO Scale” model railway layout and featured our first ever documentary embedded on the article. The last fortnight has been the most positive in our growth and ambitions to make great content for you all.

The increase in activity and views have now made us eligible for monetisation, which we have been approved for! This will mean advertisements will play either at the start of or during the video, and will create much needed revenue for the channel, to help fund our many expenses in producing these videos for you!

We get that some may find such ads irritating, however, it’s a very small price to pay to enjoy the work of any creators online for free. Everything we’ve done here has been self-funded, but we do it out of a strong burning passion and desire to create videos professionally and tell the stories of the topics we cover here. Our energy doesn’t go into chasing views, subscriber numbers, or other vanity metrics… it goes into creating good content and sharing what we believe are interesting stories to you all.

So once again, thank you all for giving us the momentum to continue moving along! We’re here for nothing else but to make great, engaging and interesting content about railways and other transport topics! Our next video should be out in a few weeks time.

Thank you and good day!

Hello! I’m here to welcome our many new subscribers and viewers who are here from our recently released Shortest Bus Route video. This has been (Surprisingly) our best performing video to date, and we’re humbled by all the feedback received, so thank you!

Trying to do YouTube, while having a life, working a full time job that takes you all over the country is definitely challenging… but not impossible! The 342 to Daceyville video took about 20hrs to edit, on and off over a fortnight, and was edited on my laptop while travelling around the country on airlines and in airline lounges.

Anyhow, have a watch of our other videos which are mainly about heritage railways, and until next time, thank you and good day!

Hello! Our latest video is now up! We’ve taken a slight pivot in topics and going away from railways and heritage…. to buses, and this transit oddity, what is possibly Australia’s shortest bus route! It’s only 650m long and takes less than the 4 min scheduled time to complete! Go watch it now, thank you and good day!
