Ireland 🇮🇪 is proposing BIG changes to Irish citizenship rules. If you are planning to apply for Irish citizenship by naturalisation, this could affect your timeline. Here’s what is being proposed.

👉🇮🇪 LANGUAGE TEST

Applicants could be required to prove proficiency in English or Irish. Irish Sign Language may also be covered. This would be a major change because Ireland currently does not have a formal language test for naturalisation.

👉From 5 YEARS to 8 YEARS

The proposed reforms would increase the general residence requirement for Irish citizenship from 5 years to 8 years. That could significantly change plans for people currently working toward naturalisation.

US 🇺🇸GREEN CARD Applicants save this date. USCIS is changing Form I-485 on September 18, 2026. If you're applying for a US Green Card from inside America, this date matters. Here’s what you need to know.👇

USCIS will publish a revised Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. This is the form many people use when applying for a Green Card through adjustment of status.

Starting September 18, USCIS says it will reject older editions of Form I-485. So don't assume a form you downloaded months ago is still valid when you're ready to file.

Check the form edition before sending your application. A wrong form edition can mean rejection and another delay.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 1. Scottish Visa

A proposed Scotland-specific immigration route designed around Scotland’s own demographic, economic and skills needs. It could potentially provide another pathway for people who want to live and work in Scotland. It is not open for applications yet.

2. Rural Visa

A proposed route focused on attracting migrants to rural and island communities facing population decline and skills shortages. The Scottish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Government has proposed piloting this approach in selected communities. This could be particularly interesting for people willing to settle outside Scotland’s major cities.

3. Scottish Graduate Visa

A proposed route for eligible international graduates of Scottish institutions. The proposal could allow eligible graduates to remain in Scotland for up to an additional 2 years after their existing Graduate Visa. It could provide more time to work, build experience and potentially transition to another immigration route.

🇨🇦 Is this Scotland’s version of Canada Express Entry? Not exactly. The Scottish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Government has looked at international regional migration models, including Canada, but it has proposed a system specifically designed around Scotland. So calling it “Scottish Express Entry” would be an oversimplification.

These are proposals, not new visas yet. Immigration is currently a reserved matter for the UK 🇬🇧Government. The Scottish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Government is asking the UK Government to consider these tailored migration routes. There is currently no application process for these proposed visas.

If implemented, these proposals could create additional opportunities for:

👉Skilled workers
👉 International graduates
👉People willing to live in rural or island Scotland
👉Workers filling Scottish skills shortages
👉 People looking to build a long-term future in Scotland

PORTUGAL🇵🇹 TRAVEL ALERT ⚠️
If you're flying into Portugal from 6 September 2026, pay attention. Portugal 🇵🇹 is moving to 100% biometric collection for eligible EES travellers at its external borders. But here's the part many immigrants may get wrong.👇

EES generally applies to non-EU nationals visiting for short stays, up to 90 days in a 180-day period. It creates a digital record of eligible non-EU short-stay travellers, including:

👉Facial image
👉Fingerprints
👉Entry & exit dates
👉Travel-document details

It replaces traditional passport stamping.

👉Tourists
👉Visitors
👉Family visitors
👉Schengen short-stay visa holders

Your first registration may take longer. Future crossings should be quicker once your record exists.

If you have a valid Portuguese residence permit, you are not registered in EES as a short-stay traveller. The same applies to people travelling with qualifying long-stay or national visas. So don't panic when you hear “Everyone from outside the EU will be fingerprinted.” That's not what EES means.

Eligible foreign residents with valid Portuguese residence permits can use automated airport e-gates where available. Your passport and residence status must be readable by the system. If the e-gate doesn't work, you may be directed to manual border control.

If you’re traveling with an expired residence card, this is where you need to be careful. Don't assume an expired Portuguese residence card means you can simply travel without questions. If you've started your renewal, keep your expired card plus proof of your renewal process with you. And check your AIMA renewal status before travelling.

ETIAS is not live. The EU is not currently accepting ETIAS applications. So be careful with websites asking you to pay for an “ETIAS application” today. The official ETIAS fee is expected to be €20 when the system launches.

EES itself did not suddenly start on 6 September. It became fully operational across the EU on 10 April 2026. What's changing now is the end of the temporary flexibility that allowed biometric collection to be suspended during severe congestion. That could mean longer queues at busy airports.

BREAKING: 7 Major UK immigration rules changes are coming. The Home Office laid Statement of Changes HC 584 on 3 Sept 2026. Most changes take effect 8 Oct 2026, but some start later. Here are the changes people already in the UK should know.👇


1. 👉Skilled Worker visa holders

If you are a Skilled Worker and the Home Office confirms you are a victim of modern slavery, new rules can allow your work conditions to be changed. You may be able to work for another employer for the rest of your current permission.


2. 👉🇪🇺 EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS)

From 9 Dec 2026, an expired BRP will no longer be accepted as identity evidence for EUSS applications. The EUSS travel permit route is also being removed. If you get a new passport, use the Update My Details service to link it to your status.


3. 👉🇪🇺 EUSS family members

HC 584 changes the deadline for certain people joining family under the EU Settlement Scheme. For eligible first time joining family members, the deadline becomes 3 months from their latest legal entry to the UK. There are exceptions, so check your situation carefully.


4. 👉EUSS: children with pre-settled status

Following Ayoola [2025] EWCA Civ 1519, new rules address children whose EU parent had a qualifying right to live and work in the UK. In certain cases, the child can keep their rights until their UK education is complete, with routes to PSS/settled status for qualifying family members.


5. 👉BN(O) visa holders

A major change is coming for BN(O) dependent children. Eligible children under 18 will no longer have to complete the normal 5-year continuous residence period before settlement. They may be able to settle with their parents when the parents qualify.


6. 👉 Erasmus+ is returning

The UK will associate with Erasmus+ from 2027. HC 584 updates the UK immigration rules for Erasmus+ activities, including eligible study, training, job shadowing and traineeships. Some eligible Erasmus+ school placements can last up to 6 months.


7. 👉UK Student visa: maintenance funds are increasing. From 30 Nov 2026:

👉London: £1,570 per month month (currently £1,529)

👉Outside London: £1,203 per month (currently £1,171)

Maximum period remains 9 months. If you're planning a Student visa application, check the amount that applies when you apply.

These changes do not mean everyone in these visa categories automatically gets a new right or settlement. Eligibility and deadlines depend on your circumstances. Verify HC 584 directly on GOV.UK before making any immigration decision:

🇬🇧If you have a UK Skilled Worker visa, you're changing employers, extending your visa, or your employer sponsors overseas workers, pay attention. The UK Home Office has updated its sponsor guidance. Here are the changes you need to know.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is coming to the Sponsorship Management System (SMS). The Home Office says mandatory MFA will be introduced in phases from 3 September 2026. This means sponsor users will need an additional security step when accessing SMS. If your employer sponsors workers, make sure HR is ready.

From 9 September 2026, sponsors will no longer be able to appoint new Level 2 Users. Existing Level 2 Users can continue during the transition, but the Level 2 role will be removed after 8 March 2027. Employers should plan ahead.

Your employer uses the Sponsorship Management System (SMS) to manage sponsorship, including assigning Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS). A CoS is normally needed before you apply for a Skilled Worker visa. So if your employer has problems accessing or managing its sponsor account, it could affect sponsorship-related work.


Are you already working in the UK? Don't ignore this. If you are changing your sponsored job or extending your Skilled Worker permission, your employer may need to assign a new CoS. Don't wait until your visa is close to expiring before checking that your employer's sponsorship arrangements are in order.


There is another important change: inactive SMS accounts. The new guidance allows the Home Office to manage inactive SMS user accounts. If a sponsor ends up with no active Level 1 User, the sponsor could face action against its licence. For employers, having the right people able to access SMS is becoming even more important.


Another change starts on 1 October 2026. Right to work responsibilities are expanding to cover certain additional working arrangements, including some contracts, individual subcontractors and online matching services. This does not mean every worker will automatically need a share code. The exact checking method depends on the circumstances.


If you're a Skilled Worker:

👉Check your visa expiry date
👉 Start extensions early
👉 If changing employer, confirm your new sponsor is ready
👉 Make sure your UKVI/eVisa details are correct

If you're an employer:

👉Check your SMS users
👉 Prepare for MFA
👉 Review Level 2 Users
👉 Make sure you have active Level 1 Users


These changes are mainly about UK sponsor compliance, but problems with sponsorship can affect workers too. Don't rely on social media alone. Read the official Home Office guidance before making immigration decisions.👇
