Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, has officially entered a crucial two-month closure starting today, April 17, 2026. This "Phase 2" renovation is focused primarily on the pitch, involving the installation of a world-class playing surface designed to meet the highest CAF and FIFA standards.
As Kenya gears up for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Ministry of Sports, led by Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, confirmed that this closure is a mandatory step to ensure the facility is tournament-ready. The project aims to rectify previous drainage issues and provide a high-performance turf suitable for international competition.
The structural transformation of the stadium is already largely complete, featuring a new all-round canopy roof, modernized individual seating with a capacity of approximately 50,000, and upgraded 3,000 Lux floodlights. Despite the closure of the main pitch, the Aquatic Centre and Indoor Arena remain open to the public.
