I hope you enjoyed our latest episode on the Holy Grail. When Rob pitched the concept as a game show, I knew from the beginning it was going to be a blast to voice, produce, and sound design (shout out to Mac Owens on the great audio edit, and Nick DeWitt on the amazing artwork).

But this episode also hit at a rather fortuitous time for me. Because, as we were set to air our silly take on everyone’s favorite medieval cup-based historical gameshow, I was asked to compete on a different comedy gameshow, “Abolish Everything!” And I’m excited to say that my episode is live right this very minute over Nebula right here:

On “Abolish Everything!”, comedian-abolitionists roast a pet peeve they want to abolish from society while a panel of improvisers dubbed “The Political Establishment” argue on behalf of the status quo. Then the live NYC audience chooses the victor to go on to the championship finale at the end of the season.

Extra History

Hey Extra Historians,

Matt here to tell you about some upcoming Extra History news. Starting this week, with the first episode of our patron voted series “Unholy Roman Emperor: Frederick II”, we’re making two changes: longer Extra History episodes that are now released bi-weekly.

This decision is a result of a lot of team discussions, test scripts, and diving deep into our YouTube analytics to ensure we continue to offer videos that our audience wants to see and YouTube wants to promote.

Of course, this decision didn’t come lightly. But after having many chats with our Writers, Artists, Studio Director, Social Media Kat, Zoey the cat, and yes, even me the showrunner, we collectively realized that everyone could benefit from having a bit more time to work on each episode. Rob and our writers will have more time to research and craft compelling historical tales. Our artists will have more time to spend on their killer illustrations and animations you love with less stress, and even our Social Media will get a boost as Kat will have more time to interact with everyone in the channel's comments.

Work/life balance is important, and internally we’ve already seen the benefits of this schedule change. Less-stressed folks just make better shows. It’s that simple.

But here’s another cool thing. The amount of video content we produce will remain the same. Just now, instead of a series consisting of five 8 to 10-minute long episodes, each series will now consist of three 14 to 16-minute long episodes. We feel that this change allows us to improve the flow of information and make our narratives even more engaging. After all, there’s a reason films tend to favor a three-act structure.

Finally, there’s YouTube’s ever-changing algorithm. I’m sure you’ve noticed in your feeds that YouTube’s discoverability now favors two things: Shorts and much longer videos, meaning they seem to be deprioritizing videos that are 5 to 10 minutes long. By making our episodes roughly 50% longer, we’re shifting our studio strategy to help YouTube prioritize our videos, with the goal of getting even more folks excited about stories from our shared past.

Then after each series wraps up, you’ll still be getting our usual one-off episode and a Lies video from Rob. Plus, due to the overwhelmingly positive response, we’re increasing the release cadence of our “Extra History Complete” videos from every other month to monthly. We love how they breathe new life into our past series with extra context and corrections from LIES episodes, and how they give newer Extra Historians a chance to catch up on our shows in an updated format.

So to summarize, all new Extra History episodes are going to be longer and will be released bi-weekly, and “Extra History Complete” will now be released monthly!

We really believe these changes are better for our team, our channel, and each and every episode we make. I’m very much looking forward to showing all this off with the launch of our “The Unholy Roman Emperor" series this Saturday.

Hello Extra Historians,
