I've ridden my bicycle across UKRAINE on two separate occasions. Once during the winter of 2012... and once during the Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014. I've since traveled back to Ukraine on several occasions without my bicycle. In fact, my last international trip was 1.5 months of travel in Ukraine! It's one of my favorite countries in the world, I have dozens of friends there and was even thinking of buying property in the country at one point in time.

Today I thought I'd share some photos from my 2012 wintertime bike tour across Ukraine.

On this particular trip, I had cycled all the way from Istanbul, Turkey... through Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova when I reached the border of Transnistria - an unrecognised, Russian-backed breakaway state located in the narrow strip of land between the Moldovan–Ukrainian border.

At the border, I was greeted with a massive military tank, soldiers with machine guns and a fat, grumpy, Russian border patrol agent who informed me that I had 4 hours to bike all the way across Transnistria.

After having my passport handed back to me, I took off down the road and raced toward the border of Ukraine. A short while later, I noticed I was being followed.

Every once and a while, a white van would zoom past me down the road. Then it would pull over in the distance, sit there for a few minutes, and then come back down the road in my direction. The van would pass, then turn around and come back toward me, repeating this action several times throughout the day.

Eventually, I stopped and pulled out my camera, which was outfitted with a large zoom lens. With the van now sitting off in the distance ahead of me, I quickly peered into my camera and zoomed in on the suspicious white vehicle. Inside the driver's seat of the van was a man wearing full camouflage garb and looking directly at me through a set of binoculars. Yep, I was definitely being surveilled!

Eventually, I reached the border of Transnistria and Ukraine... and I've never felt so good passing from one "country" into another. The sun was shining... the border guards in Ukraine were incredibly kind and welcoming... and even though I had never been to Ukraine before, I already had a good feeling about the place.

That night I cycled about 10 miles/16 km down the road before setting up my tent in an orchard. I crawled inside my sleeping bag and went to sleep, not knowing anything about Ukraine or what was in store for me over the next several weeks.

The following morning, I woke up in a deep, dark fog. I could barely see 10 feet in front of me sometimes. And that fog remained with me for the next 2 weeks as I slowly cycled my way across the country.

It was freezing cold, dark, wet and miserable much of the time. But I loved it! The people were warm and welcoming; the food was delicious and inexpensive; and it was so cold outside I could carry ice cream in my pannier bags as I cycled!

I'll share more of my adventures in Ukraine in a future post... but for now, please visit the Bicycle Touring Pro Facebook page to see more photos from my 2012 bike tour across Ukraine: www.facebook.com/bicycletouring

It's Sunday!!! - A great day to sit down and watch Bicycle Touring Pro's latest video from his cycling adventures in Northern California.

What would you do if a truck driver pulled over and told you that he had just seen a bear in the middle of the road? Would you turn around? Or keep pedaling?

And how scared would you be if you had to camp in the forest knowing that a bear had just been spotted in the area?
