அந்த ஒன்பது நாட்கள் முடிவடையவே கூடாது என்று தோன்றும்.

அது ஒரு திருவிழா மட்டுமல்ல...
ஒரு தலைமுறையை ஒன்றாக இணைத்த நினைவுகள்.

For nine unforgettable days...

Beautiful kolams...
Lamp-lit streets...
and Lord Ganapati blessing every home.

ஒன்பது நாள் பிரம்மோற்சவம் தொடங்கும் முன்...
எங்கள் ஊரில் ஒரு சிறப்பு வழக்கம் இருந்தது.
தேட்டை கழித்தல்.

மாலை சூரியன் மறையத் தொடங்கும்...
திடீரென்று...
"தோம்... தோம்... தோம்..."
ஒரே தாளத்தில் ஒலிக்கும் மேளத்தின் சத்தம்...
மூன்று தெருக்களிலும் எதிரொலிக்கும்.
எல்லா குழந்தைகளும் விளையாட்டை நிறுத்திவிடுவோம்.
வீட்டு வாசலில் நின்று அந்த ஊர்வலத்தை அமைதியாகப் பார்ப்போம்.
எரியும் தென்னை ஓலைகளை ஏந்தியவர்கள்...
ஒவ்வொரு தெருவிலும் மெதுவாக நடந்து செல்வார்கள்.
புகை மெதுவாக வீதியெங்கும் பரவும்.
பெரியவர்கள் சொல்வார்கள்...
"இது ஊரையே சுத்தப்படுத்தும் சடங்கு...
திருவிழாவுக்கு முன் மனமும், இடமும் புனிதமாக வேண்டும்."
அப்போது அதன் அர்த்தம் எங்களுக்கு முழுமையாகப் புரியவில்லை.
ஆனால்...
அந்த புகையின் மணமும்...
அந்த மேளத்தின் ஒலியும்...
இன்றும் என் நினைவுகளில் அப்படியே இருக்கிறது.

Before the nine-day Brahmotsavam...
our village observed a special purification ritual.
The slow beat of the drum echoed through every street...
Burning coconut leaves were carried in procession...
The drifting smoke reminded everyone that the village was preparing itself for something sacred.
For us children...
that sound meant only one thing...
The festival was about to begin.
