Why not all minerals are commodities.

On daily basis conversations like this usually shows up

Someone asks me what our company does.
I replied — mineral exploration, site procurement, mining and trading.

The next question is about diamond, gold, oil, copper.
Commodities.

And honestly, that makes sense.
That’s what most people see.
Live prices. Charts. Global benchmarks.

But a large part of what we deal with doesn’t work like that at all.

Take something simple.
Iron ore vs iron.
Iron ore comes out of the ground.
Iron is what you get after processing it.
Connected? Yes.
Same market behaviour? Not even close.

Commodities are standardised.
There’s a reference price. You can look it up instantly.

Industrial minerals are different.
Limestone. Bauxite. Silica.
No standard specs. No exchange. No single “today’s price.”

So when someone asks me:
“What’s the price?”
The only honest answer is:
It depends. On:
- Specification
- Quantity
- Location
- Logistics
- Urgency

Which is why two people buying the “same” mineral can end up paying completely different prices.
That’s the difference most people don’t see.

Not because they’re wrong.

Just because this side of the market isn’t visible.
Commodities are priced by the market.
Industrial minerals are priced by context.

And once you see that difference,
the industry looks will look very different to you.
