अमेरिका के सैमुअल कोल्ट ने 1836 में आज ही पहली रिवाल्वर का पेटेंट हासिल किया था। इस रिवाल्वर की खासियत यह थी कि इसमें एक बार में पांच गोलियां भर कर दागी जा सकती थीं। इसे बार बार लोड नहीं करना पड़ता था। इसका निशाना सटीक था और चलाना भी बहुत आसान था।
