New video with Céline Van Zyl, Senior Pelvic Physiotherapist here at Advantage Healthcare, on endometriosis pain and flare-ups.
A lot of women are diagnosed with endometriosis and then left to work out the pain on their own. Céline explains why that pain can become stronger over time, and how the pelvic floor can tighten to guard a sore area, much like your shoulders creep up when you're stressed. She also covers why a flare-up doesn't necessarily mean the endometriosis has progressed, and what actually helps on a bad day, including how to approach exercise when it tends to set things off.
If you live with endometriosis, which symptom do you find hardest to manage? Let us know in the comments, because it helps us decide what to cover next.

Am I making it worse? It's the question people with persistent pain ask themselves every time they lift something heavy or go for a longer walk than usual. Charles answers it in our latest episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29x8B...
If pain doesn't always mean damage, it's tempting to think you should just push through it. Charles explains why that's usually poor advice, and why avoiding everything that hurts can keep you stuck just as much.
He also talks about flare ups. A sore couple of days after a big weekend in the garden doesn't automatically mean you've reinjured something, and he goes through which changes in symptoms are worth getting checked.
The most useful part for a lot of people will be his simple test for any activity. Start with an amount you know you can generally manage, then ask yourself whether the pain felt familiar, whether you stayed in control of the movement, and how your body settled later that day and the next. If those answers are good, that's an amount you can repeat and build on.
What's the activity you've been most worried about making things worse? Let us know in the comments.
