We’re thrilled to announce our new album ‘Rituals’ will come into the world May 30!! Today we share the first single, ‘All Around You,’ and a whole slew of tour dates.
Tour presale starts tomorrow at 10am, and you can preorder and presave the album now. Making this album nearly broke our hearts and minds, but we couldn’t be prouder of the result. We’ll have much more to tell you about Rituals soon—overjoyed to finally share it!
It’s been a long year and a half. Knowing that we had this record made truly saved our minds when the pandemic began.
It’s been easy to get distracted by the individual tracks that made their way into the world as singles. We hadn’t listened through to the whole album in a while until the CDs arrived a few weeks ago. Now that we’re listening start to finish again, we’re reminded of how the sum is truly greater than the parts—the sequence is definitive. We finished other songs we loved during this session that we ended up scratching because we were so smitten with the record as we present it to you today.
We know some of you are thrown off by this new name deal, and yes, it’s a huge thing. But it’s also not. We’re just humans with abstract ambitions and evolving identities, and there’s no way to know ourselves better without trying. We are deeply, deeply grateful to each of you who are still here for the musical ride.
We recorded this in our friend Alex Bingham's family’s lake house a few hours from home, in part because we didn’t want to leave our kid for long, and in part because we were scared of letting in some new creative minds to do something really intimate, and we weren’t sure how successful we would be at it. Josh Kaufman and D. James Goodwin were instantly inspiring and it was a dream to create with them. We brought a million ideas and still gained an infinite amount from the musical genius and perspective of Josh Kaufman. Josh Oliver, Clint Mullican, and Joe Westerlund all brought their invaluable musical intuitions to the room in a way that felt easier, freer and more unrestricted than on any earlier albums.
These songs were mostly born from deep night musings. They are filled with gaps in the thought process that get filled in by the listener and ourselves each time we play them. We love that. So please have at it today. Or tonight.
A million thanks to this release team for their unflinching support and hard work, and to all of you for allowing the space for us to do this our way.
We are in love with this video Elizabeth Weinberg made for Upside Down. We could tell from our first convo that she got the feeling and message of the song, and we were so honored she did the video. When we were sent the first edit, we smiled all the way through. Hope it brings you some good feels today
Y’all we have some foundational news to share today—our band is now called Watchhouse. It’s a new name to carry this music you know as Mandolin Orange into the future. We’d love to tell you a little more about it, and share our new video and song, Better Way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Watchhouse comes from a memory—a place where I spent memorable, secluded, and meditative time as a teenager. During those same years I learned how music wasn’t just something that happened. It’s a place, it’s gravity (🍓fields was the song that did it). It was an escape, and I began spending all my time there. I wrote song after song, and found someone to share it with when I met Emily. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This past year has been the first time we’ve stayed still since we were 21, and the pause gave us the opportunity to sit with ourselves and set intentions. We have long been burdened by the dichotomy between our band name and the music we strive to create—if you’ve heard the songs, you know they are personal. Now that we can see a future where music will be a shared experience again, we’re defining the space we share with you on a stage or in your headphones, and making it one that welcomes our creativity and anyone who wants to listen.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We are lucky that Mandolin Orange means something to many people, and have no intention of leaving behind our older material. It’s as important to us as ever, and we can’t wait to bring it back to your ears as Watchhouse, alongside a brand new album that we are particularly fond of (news soon!). Thank you for hearing our music—we owe something to anyone still reading this and we can’t wait to continue this journey with you. You can listen to our new song, Better Way, and watch the visual realization 💫of our dreams💫 below.
