I write and produce video essays on Asian Dramas (mostly K-dramas) whenever a story or character gets stuck in my head. My working motto is that no piece of fiction is above critique, no matter how great or silly.
Halo. I'm going live with a friend in a bit to discuss Korean and Japanese collaborations in dramaland recently. Don't worry if you miss it. The replay will be available!
Have you noticed how many Korean-Japanese collab dramas dropped in the last year? I'm thinking of doing a livestream with a friend who watches WAAAY more J-drama than I do. To specifically discuss these K-Jdramas, starting from (probably?) Eye Love You (2024) all the way to Romantics Anonymous (2025) and Can This Love Be Translated (2026). There have been a dozen at this point (feels like) and we need to talk about it. Does that sound fun? Yes, no? What do you say?
Friends, I'm going to try and go live tomorrow (sunday). I want to do one of those end of the month, here's what I watched, drama dump streams. (I watched a lot of dramas!) Expect the lowest quality stream possible, please. I struggled with OBS for 2 hours today and am still convinced things will go wrong. Don't yet know when I'll start. Likely evening my time (India).
Glory is the drama to beat in 2026. This hecking story. I haven't yelled at the TV or punched the air in satisfaction so much in a very long time. It's so consistent in characterisation. Dialogues that would mean nothing in other dramas become hints and foreshadowing 10 episodes ahead. Every time I think, hey that doesn't make sense, Glory says, patience! Rong Shan Bao will not let you down. 😭
Friends, this channel is now a Y2K baby. At the start of this year it traveled from the early 700s when the Umayyad Caliphate was expanding to the 900s when the Koryo dynasty was being formed, and then zooming past all the crusades, it lingered in the 1500s when Copernicus said that the earth goes round the sun and Columbus "discovered" America, then almost skipped straight into the Battle of Plassey & Anglo-Maratha wars in the 1700s and finally did a slow crawl to the 1980s where it kinda seemed to stall - made me think I wouldn't even get to be born. But then in the last 2 days it zwooped into the 21st century. 🤣
It's been fun. I was crap at posting regularly so the sub count feels higher than I deserve. But I'll try to make up for it in 2026. ☺️
Happy wintery vibes, everyone! I'm watching really bad christmas movies and cuddling my cats and dogs. Hope you're having a restful holiday too!
Halo, Halo. It looks like I'll have to postpone the livestream dissecting audience co-creation in Bon Appetit Your Majesty.
I've been cultivating a nice strong cold for a few days and it's just about making me breathe fire at this point. I'll skip the holiday week and do it in January. I'm so sorry for not taking better care.
In the meanwhile, will try to get another video out this week. 🤞
Did you guys know that there is a literary phenomenon known as "audience co-creation"? It's when we subconsciously add details to a story to make it make sense cause the original narrative had holes you could run a truck through.
That's what happened to a lot of us with Bon Appétit Your Majesty.
I'll be discussing this and other fun stuff I realised while reading your comments in a livestream next tuesday (23rd december).
*Should I do a livestream discussing the responses?*
Hello. I got some really interesting responses to this last video on Bon Appétit Your Majesty, where I asked viewers who loved the drama if they noticed the issues and ignored it, or genuinely interpreted certain scenes differently.
So, I was thinking of doing a livestream talking about how the drama managed to kind of hoodwink good faith viewers while leaving enough room for some people to make up their own backstories. I also got some replies on Bluesky where people were unsure that the tyrant character is based on a real king at all, and so I thought we could do a quick dive into how fictionlising history work as well.Anywho, that's a thought I had.
If you guys find it interesting, can you let me know by commenting? I'll schedule something this week. (I don't know if I want to do a public live, so I might keep it unlisted and make it accessible to all free and paid patreon members. Will post the link & time here as well.)
This scene in Would You Marry Me takes men's feminist solidarity back 10-20 years. Why is a random guy pushing aside a doctor MID CPR and telling her to cover up instead of publicly shaming the pervert filming her?
No, beating him up in secret later does nothing. He's already humiliated the victim and undermined her professionalism. The music just makes me want to punch everyone involved.
Would you marry me, so far, has been such a nice revisit to 2017s romcom kdrama era. Minus the unnecessary stress. Our male lead is a grumpy teddy bear with sense and sensitivity. Our female lead is mildly bumbling but not a fool. Every time she stands up for herself she leaves a mile long burn.

Why is this in my comfort romcom?
