To celebrate Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, I want to write about the Pokémon I love the most: Poliwhirl.

At a glance, Poliwhirl somehow looks even cuter than Poliwag. Its rounder body and big, bulging eyes give it that unmistakable “frog-eyed” charm. It was also one of Satoshi Tajiri’s favorite Pokémon, which might explain why it appeared so frequently in the early years of the franchise. Back then, Poliwhirl was everywhere in merchandise and promotional material. It even appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1999. At times, it almost feels like Poliwhirl was once considered as a potential mascot, much like Pikachu.

Now, let us begin.

Poliwag

Poliwag is instantly recognizable. One glance, and your eyes are drawn straight to the large spiral on its belly, framed by its round shape and bright blue color. It is also a very “honest” Pokémon in the most literal sense, because its insides are almost visible right in front of you. That spiral is actually inspired by the transparent organs of glass frog tadpoles in real life, whose skin allows their internal structures to be seen.

What could have been creepy is instead rendered in a very simple and adorable way. Combined with its tiny pink lips, Poliwag feels more innocent than unsettling. Of course, its organs are not truly exposed. They are covered by a thin, transparent membrane. This membrane is elastic enough to absorb impacts, and if you look closely at Ken Sugimori’s artwork, you can even see a small highlight reflecting off its surface.

Because its skin is thin and easily dries out, the Poli line relies on Water Absorb to retain moisture when on land. Amphibians can also breathe through their skin, which is why they must live in damp environments near ponds and wetlands. This is reflected in the Ability Damp. Despite being just a tadpole Pokémon, Poliwag is surprisingly large compared to many first stage Pokémon, large enough to use moves like Body Slam.

Poliwhirl

When Poliwag evolves into Poliwhirl, it enters a more mature stage. Its tail disappears, and arms grow out, shaped like it is wearing gloves. According to rare anatomical sketches, those “gloves” are actually layers of skin covering fingers that are still inside the body. This also serves as an early hint of the Fighting type in its later evolution, giving Poliwhirl the image of a mischievous kid who has just discovered rough play.

These changes closely mirror real tadpole metamorphosis. Tadpoles grow hind legs first, then front legs, while their tails gradually vanish. Their breathing also shifts from gills to lungs. This is why Poliwhirl has visible nostrils, while its mouth is cleverly hidden at the top of the spiral, making many people believe the spiral itself is its mouth. Ironically, Poliwhirl often shoots water from the spiral, which only reinforces that misunderstanding.

Another subtle detail is that the spiral changes direction. The Pokédex even states that Poliwhirl can use its spiral to perform Hypnosis. Coincidentally, clockwise spirals are often associated with hypnotic visual effects. While Poliwag can learn Hypnosis too, the design fits Poliwhirl particularly well. Still, this is also a common defensive pattern in nature, so it is not enough to classify Poliwhirl as a Psychic type.

This idea may also be inspired by the Coriolis effect. The Pokédex once said that the direction of Poliwag’s spiral varies by region. On Earth, storms rotate counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere because of the planet’s rotation. Interestingly, in official artwork, Poliwag is almost always shown with a counterclockwise spiral, while Poliwhirl reverses it, making the two stages easy to tell apart.

Poliwrath

Compared to the earlier forms, Poliwrath still looks very much like Poliwhirl. At the time, most final evolutions were designed to look drastically different from their previous stages, but Poliwrath went against that trend. Because of this, many fans feel that the alternate evolution branch alone would still feel complete even without Poliwrath.

That said, Poliwrath does introduce clear changes. Its eyes become more aggressive, its gloves separate into real fingers, and its body grows visibly muscular. All of this supports its Fighting type. The once innocent tadpole has now become a very buff tadpole, strong enough to throw even massive opponents with Circle Throw.

The Pokédex describes Poliwrath as pure muscle, capable of swimming faster than world class athletes. This combination of frog, strength, and speed makes perfect sense. Frogs swim using powerful kicks, creating strong bursts of force. From that motion, humans developed the breaststroke, a style that relies heavily on muscular power. Professional breaststroke swimmers often have stocky builds similar to Poliwrath.

Its body also becomes more humanoid. The spiral on its belly is no longer perfectly round, slightly resembling the shape of a chest. Its legs are thicker and longer, giving it a stable stance. Altogether, Poliwrath looks like a swimmer wearing a blue full body swimsuit, similar to the high performance suits once used in competitions before being banned for their hydrodynamic advantages.

Across the Poli line, hydrodynamics are everywhere. Poliwag uses its wide tail for propulsion and steering, while Poliwhirl and Poliwrath rely on strong, flexible limbs to move swiftly. This is why they all share the Ability Swift Swim.

Politoed

Politoed was introduced later and completes the evolutionary journey of the Poli line. Its green color may seem unusual at first, but green is actually common among real adult frogs. Even after becoming a frog, Politoed keeps a small spiral on its belly as a reminder of its earlier forms. In real glass frogs, the organs are still visible, but no longer twisted like a tadpole’s. To strengthen the connection, Politoed also gains a curled antenna on its head, acting as a symbolic replacement for the old spiral and representing its status as a leader.

The Pokédex describes Politoed as the leader of Poliwag and Poliwhirl. It puffs up its throat and lets out a powerful call, and when its voice is heard, the entire group gathers instantly. This is why it learns sound based moves like Perish Song and Hyper Voice. Combined with the fact that Politoed only evolves with a King’s Rock, it is hard not to think of the Frog Prince from European fairy tales.

In East Asia, frogs have long been seen as messengers of rain. This belief comes from natural observation, as frogs become more active and vocal when humidity rises, especially before rainfall. Over time, their calls became a symbol of incoming rain. From this idea, every member of the Poli line can learn Rain Dance. Politoed goes even further with its Ability Drizzle, proudly using Swagger.

Have you noticed that Poliwrath, a tadpole, is much bigger than Politoed? It sounds strange, but this happens in nature. The most famous example is the paradox frog, Pseudis paradoxa. Its tadpoles can grow up to 27 cm long, making them the largest tadpoles in the world. After metamorphosis, the adult frog shrinks to only a quarter or a third of that length.

That is all for now. Thank you for reading. ❤

The scene where Dragonite gently pats Ult on the head is incredibly touching, almost like a father’s gesture. After all, Dragonite was originally a Pokémon given to Ult by his father.

Because of an unconfirmed tragedy, possibly his father’s death, Ult was forced to live as a homeless child and was eventually taken in by Emma. At first, Dragonite refused to leave its Poké Ball because it did not yet acknowledge Ult's strength or resolve. From that moment on, Ult’s goal has been to grow stronger, all the way up to the present, in order to earn Dragonite’s trust.

Moreover, Dragonite’s Mega Evolution symbolizes something even deeper. Ult has learned to protect others, even though he and Dragonite have not spent much time together yet. This is especially meaningful, as kindness and compassion are core traits of Mega Dragonite itself.
