MY CHANNEL IS DEDICATED TO TWO PIANO LEGENDS SHURA CHERKASSKY AND GYORGY CZIFFRA. THEY WERE VERY MUCH A PART OF MY YOUTH. CZIFFRA APPEARED MANY TIMES ON TELEVISION IN THE UK IN THE LATE 1950S AND EARLY 1960S. I WAS ALSO FORTUNATE TO SEE HIM PLAY LISZT'S FIRST PIANO CONCERTO AND HUNGARIAN FANTASY FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA WITH THE HALLE ORCHESTRA IN 1959. CHERKASSKY PLAYED AT THE LONDON PROMENADE CONCERTS MANY TIMES. HIS PERFORMANCE OF BOTH TCHAIKOVSKY CONCERTOS IS UNIQUE. HIS STYLE OF PLAYING REFLECTS A BYGONE AGE WHEN THE PERFORMER WAS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE COMPOSER. HE PLAYS WITH STYLE, PERSONALITY, CHARM AND WIT AND PRODUCES A LUXURIANT PIANO TONE. SOUND WAS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE TO CHERKASSKY. BOTH CZIFFRA AND CHERKASSKY PROVIDE US WITH A LINK TO AN EARLIER STYLE OF PLAYING AND PERFORMANCE. WE WILL NEVER SEE THEIR LIKE AGAIN. MY CHANNEL ALSO INCLUDES SOME FAVOURITE WORKS SUCH AS TCHAIKOVSKY'S FIFTH SYMPHONY, FAVOURITE PIANO CONCERTOS AND VIOLIN CONCERTOS.

Cherkassky in rehearsal. Some conductors were afraid to work with Shura as he was such a spontaneous artist. He would sometimes change on the spur of the moment what was agreed in rehearsal.

Cziffra recorded the Tchaikovsky first concerto twice and played it in public until the early 1960s. He also performed the concerto at the Royal Festival Hall London in the late fifties under Giulini.

Father and son in this very lyrical and beautiful account of Franck's Symphonic Variations. Cziffra Jr. was to die in a house fire in 1981 which makes this performance even more poignant. After 1981 Cziffra never played with orchestra again and his last Liszt recording is dedicated to his son's memory.

Cziffra was famed as a Liszt pianist but he also loved to perform the works of Chopin and Schumann. Here he gives a brilliant account of Chopin/Liszt 'The Maiden's Wish.'
