What can vanlifers learn from people who are already figuring out how to share land?

In “Pay Up or Give Up?” (https://youtu.be/9kZaHxlDg0s) I asked where vanlifers go when affordable and legal places to park keep disappearing.

Now I want to take that question a step further 👉

I’m interested in visiting intentional communities and learning how they’re actually making shared land work, from buying and financing land to sharing resources, creating affordable places to live, and figuring out how people contribute to the community, and I recently asked if you’d be interested in seeing that kind of content from me as a solution to some of the problems the Vanlife community faces -

What happens when there’s nowhere left to park?

Vanlife keeps getting squeezed. Public land is closing, cities are banning overnight parking, and finding somewhere safe, legal, and affordable to exist is getting harder.

I don’t want us to just keep chasing the next place we’re allowed to park. I want to see what other communities are building and whether there are ideas we can steal, adapt, or build ourselves.

I’m about to see inside some ecovillages and cohousing communities and show you how they actually work.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how our community can create real solutions instead of constantly fighting for a shrinking number of places to stay.

There are already people creating intentional communities, sharing land, and figuring out different ways to live together. I’m about to visit some of these communities to see what they’re doing and whether any of their ideas could actually work for us.

Jon Paxton from the Coconino County Flagstaff Sheriff’s Office stood at the NVRC Summit and told us that everyone is treated equally.

The speed that the coffee I had just sipped sprayed out of my mouth at light speed.

I asked about being harassed while legally parked in Flagstaff. I asked what happens when law enforcement sends a WRONG 14-day violation report to the Forest Service.

His answers ticked me off.

And what I heard from other people living in vehicles at this summit ticked me off even more.

A New Tool is Coming for Nomads & it’s FREE

This could change how we find legal places to park!

A few months ago, I had a conversation with a friend about one of the biggest problems I see in the nomad community: finding a legal place to exist.

Not “where can I camp?” - more like knowing what you’re actually allowed to do before you arrive, because the rules surrounding overnight parking, sleeping in vehicles, camping, street parking, private property, and all the other little municipal regulations we run into can be an absolute nightmare to keep track of.

They change often and they vary from town to town, and sometimes they’re buried in municipal codes and you don’t find out about them until you’re already there (and you’re hearing about it from a police officer after you’ve already gotten the knock).

I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to research this stuff myself, and even with all the tools available to me, I’ve never been able to confidently say, “Here is EVERYTHING you need to know about this place.”

That conversation eventually turned into something I wasn’t expecting: something that could potentially make navigating this problem a heck of a lot easier for nomads!

It isn’t another camping app or listing, nor is it a club or membership thing, and there’s no monthly subscription!

The whole goal is to make it available to the community for free ✨

It is still in its beta version, so any and all feedback is appreciated 🙌

“Everybody must camp for free or they’re not a real vanlifer.”

Excuse me…What?!

I keep seeing this attitude on my last video, and I think it’s hurting us.

I LOVE free camping. I’ve spent years living on public land, and I absolutely believe we should fight to preserve access to it. But as public land closes, restrictions increase, and legal places to park become harder to find, why are we treating paid camping like some kind of betrayal of the lifestyle?

The fact that I can afford to pay for camping means I’m leaving the limited free sites available for people who CAN’T afford to pay. Yet some commenters seem genuinely upset that I’ve been paying for camping - enough to actually call me a “sellout.”

If a private landowner is willing to welcome nomads, a platform connects us with that landowner, and our money helps keep that land viable…why wouldn’t we use that infrastructure?

We don’t have to choose between free camping and paid camping. We need MORE options.

And if we want vanlife to survive, maybe we should stop dividing ourselves into “real vanlifers” and “sellouts” based on how someone chooses to spend $40 for a place to stay. The LAST thing we need right now is MORE DIVISION.

So I genuinely want to know:

Is paying for camping a betrayal of vanlife or is it one of the tools that could help keep vanlife alive?

We talk A LOT about finding free places to camp and believe me, I understand why. Vanlife is getting more expensive and the free spots fill up faster…

But what if part of keeping Vanlife alive means looking at where we spend our money a little differently?

In my next video, I’m visiting a small farm that opened up part of its land to campers through Hipcamp. We get to hear directly from the person behind it and talk about what happens when vanlifers choose to spend a little money with small, local landowners instead of always searching for somewhere to park for free.

We're traveling through these communities anyway, why not help support the people and places we actually want to see survive?
