Every year on 1 December, the world unites to observe World AIDS Day — a day to remember those we’ve lost, support those living with HIV, and renew our shared commitment to ending stigma and discrimination ❤️

First established in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first-ever global health awareness day. It reminds us that the fight against HIV is not over and that through education, compassion, and understanding, we can continue to save lives and build a more inclusive world.

Here on Scot Wonders, we usually take you on scenic journeys across Scotland and the UK, exploring breathtaking landscapes and hidden gems. But today’s journey is one of empathy and unity — because awareness and kindness know no borders. A Mini History of Aberdeen’s Landmarks:

St Machar’s Cathedral – Founded in the 12th century and completed in the 16th century, this granite cathedral in Old Aberdeen is famous for its unique heraldic ceiling and twin spires. It remains one of the finest medieval buildings in Scotland.

King’s College, Old Aberdeen – Established in 1495, it is Scotland’s third oldest university. Its iconic crown tower is a symbol of Aberdeen and reflects the city’s deep academic and religious heritage.

New King’s Building – Part of the University of Aberdeen’s expansion, this structure complements Old King’s with its historic yet evolving academic presence.

Marischal College – Built in 1837 and expanded in 1906, it is one of the largest granite buildings in the world. Today, it houses Aberdeen City Council and is a striking example of Scottish Gothic architecture.

Together, these landmarks represent Aberdeen’s long history of faith, education, and civic pride – all carved from the city’s world-famous granite.

A Mini History of the North Sea in Aberdeen:

The North Sea has always played a vital role in Aberdeen’s history. Known as the “Granite City by the Sea,” Aberdeen has been a hub for fishing, shipbuilding and trade for centuries. In the late 20th century, it became world-famous as the centre of the North Sea oil and gas industry, bringing global attention and prosperity to the region.

Alongside its industrial importance, the North Sea coast around Aberdeen is also celebrated for its natural beauty – from the sandy stretches of Aberdeen Beach, to the dramatic cliffs at the Bullers of Buchan, and the iconic Girdleness Lighthouse, which has guided ships since 1833. Today, the North Sea remains part of Aberdeen’s identity, blending rugged scenery, wildlife, and history with its maritime legacy.

Hazlehead Pets’ Corner has been a much-loved family attraction in Aberdeen for decades. Originally part of Hazlehead House estate (opened as a public park in 1920), the area once hosted Aberdeen Zoo in the 1960s before it closed in 1977.

Today, Pets’ Corner is home to friendly farm animals, birds, reptiles and more – making it a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
