We're honored that ‪@MikeOBrienMedia‬ included the New VMAX VX2 Hub in his 2025 Ultimate Gift Guide! (he has 626k subs on YouTube!)

"If you want something that is much more premium, but still kind of a compact scooter, meant for commuting that you could carry up the steps if you needed to. My recommendation is literally any scooter from VMAX. You've got great suspension, you've got blinkers on here you've got the full nine on anything you could want from an electric scooter, while still going a comfortable safe speed... "

What to look for when buying electric scooters this holiday season.

As a professional scooter reviewer, I’ve tested more than 200 electric scooters — from a $199 Amazon special to a $6,000, 183-lb monster I rode for four hours non-stop.

One thing I’ve learned is this: cheap scooters aren’t always a bargain.
This holiday season, here’s how to tell a smoking good deal from a scooter that could literally go up in smoke.

Everyone loves the idea of a low-cost e-scooter. They’re fun, portable, and a great way to save gas money. But there’s a dark side most first-time buyers don’t see until it’s too late — weak brakes, wobbly stems, sketchy range claims, or worse, scooters that break in half after a few months.

The hardest lesson for most riders is figuring out where the line is between “good deal” and “too cheap.” A sub-$500 scooter can be an incredible value… or a complete nightmare. I’ve ridden both.

The difference usually comes down to safety, ride quality, and reliability.
Real brands invest in stronger frames, UL-compliant batteries, and proper parts support. The no-name ones will sell you a scooter on Amazon but have zero local support when something goes wrong.

What really surprises people once they get their first scooter is how much comfort and confidence matter. A scooter that vibrates so badly your vision blurs isn’t something you’ll want to ride to work every day. And range or hill-climbing specs that exist only on paper don’t help much when you’re pushing a dead scooter up a hill.
I love affordable scooters — they open the door for so many new riders — but I’ve also seen how cutting corners can cost more in the long run, and even worse, drive some new riders away from electric scooters forever. Sometimes spending a little more means you actually get to keep riding.

If you’re shopping for your first scooter, look beyond price. Look for the ones built to last, with real safety certifications and a company that will still pick up the phone six months later.

💡 My number one recommendation when friends or relatives ask which scooter to buy during the holidays:

Before you buy, make sure you can buy replacement parts for that specific scooter on the company’s website.
At minimum, check for:
Spare tires
Charger
Motor controller
Battery
Display

If they don’t sell parts, they probably don’t have them for you under warranty either.
Curious to hear from others - what’s your experience been with budget scooters? Have you found any hidden gems, or learned a hard lesson the expensive way?
