A Mother's Private Letter to her son during Francoist Spain

Mi queridísimo Alfonso,

I cannot express the joy I felt when your letter arrived. I read and reread every word, every line, committing them to my corazón. To know that you are alive and safe fills me with such alivio. I am even more grateful that you are not here in España, for you would not recognize your beloved homeland now. And knowing your brave espíritu, your coraje, and your corazón de fuego—you would not stay silent with all that is happening. Truly, you are your father’s son.

There is something I must tell you, though it grieves me deeply to write it. My corazón burns with worry and fear even as I put pen to paper. You asked about your padre, and I cannot—will not—tell you a lie.

Last week they came for him. They took him—your father, mi amado esposo—and the silence in this house grows heavier with each passing day. They called it “justicia,” though we both know it was nothing more than vengeance. He spoke too much, asked too many questions, wrote too articles. They led him away at dawn, his hands bound, rifles at his back.

Chronicles of Iron & Empire

During the nika riots of 523 in Constantinople, Emperor Justinian's adviser counseled him to flee the city they even had a ship ready for him to sail away. It was his wife Empress Theodora who encouraged him to stay, she admonished him saying: "I shall never be separated from the purple, nor shall I live for a single day if those who encounter me do not call me mistress. For me the old saying is best, power is a splendid shroud." These words gave Emperor Justinian the courage he needed to remain in the city and fight for his empire. Thus the rulership of Emperor Justinian was saved by the powerful words of his wife.
