Matthew 11:28
Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, says the Lord.
GOSPEL Luke 7:36-50

At that time: One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisees house, and sat at table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner." And Jesus answering said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he answered, "What is it, Teacher?" "A certain creditor had two debtors; one word five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he forgave them both. Now which of them will love him more?" Simon answered, "The one, I suppose, to whom he forgave more." And he said to him, "You have judged rightly." Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house, you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little." And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this, who even forgives sins?" And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace.
Reflection

The stereotypes that govern our minds and hearts blind us to the dignity of others. We build walls and barriers to keep people apart. We learn early in life to keep certain people at a distance. Conditioned by our culture to view with suspicion people of different racial, ethnic, cultural, social and religious backgrounds, we misread and misrepresent people's actions when we see them through the cracked lens of prejudice. We feel threatened by the presence of people who are different. We feel superior to people who have been labeled social outcasts. We become cruel and harsh towards them. But Jesus dismantles all walls between people. He gives us a different standard by which to live and reveal God's love. Our mission is to build communities of love and peace where all feel at home.

MOSES LIFTED UP THE SERPENT IN THE WILDERNESS

GOSPEL John 3:13-17

At that time: Jesus said to Nicodemus, "No one

has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up,

that whoever believes in him may have eternal not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the

life." For God so loved the world that he gave his

only Son, that whoever believes in him should

Son into the world, not to condemn the world,

but that the world might be saved through him.

Reflection

The Cross is the apex of love, it is the instrument on which was rewritten the horrible history of sinful humanity. We should not be afraid to look at the cross, as it is a true sign of victory against sin and death. Jesus says in today's GOSPEL, "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life." The cross once bore the fruits of death; today, it bears life for those who desire to savor its fruits. Fear not, therefore, to look at the cross, hang it on the doorpost of your home, office, or around your neck. We draw strength from it when the challenges and setbacks of this world outweigh us. Looking at our Savior bearing our death, we triumph with and through Him.

LEARN TO BEAR GOOD FRUIT

GOSPEL Luke 6:43-49

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good man out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure produces evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. "Why do you call me ' Lord, Lord, and not do what I tell you? Every one who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep, and laid the foundation upon rock; and when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But he who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."K

Reflection

Jesus calls us to examine our heart to find out what is stored there. Perhaps our heart stores up sorrow, anxiety and distress, prejudice, blame and irresponsibility. Whatever negative "treasure" we store in our heart will find a way out in physical pain, or in words and actions that may cause harm to others. Perhaps our heart is empty, with no compassion, kindness, humor, or sympathy stored up. Empty hearts display a tendency to remain isolated and indifferent to those in need. Or perhaps our hearts have stored up faith in God, forgiveness, humility, gratitude and joy. Whatever positive treasure we store in our heart will flow out of us and transform the world.

CAN A BLIND MAN LEAD A BLIND MAN

GOSPEL Luke 6:39-42

At that time: Jesus told his disciples a parable: "Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above his teacher, but every one when he is fully taught will be like his teacher. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye, when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own

eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your

own eye, and then you will see clearly to take

out the speck that is in your brother's eye.

Reflection

At a time when everyone is in a mad rush, everyone wants to be at the tup, everyone was to lead and control, Jesus tells us in today's GOSPEL to "be careful". If you want to lead others and be in control, first lead yourself. If you cannot lead and control yourself, then you cannot lead and control others. We often point fingers at others for the very same offenses we are guilty of. In our quest to overrule others, we blame everyone except ourselves for anything and everything. Jesus tells us emphatically: "Remove the log in your own eyes," so we can see clearly. He calls us to be concerned about our own sanctification and not preoccupy ourselves with judging others while unmindful of our own faults. Set a high standard for oneself, but be gentle with others.

BRETHREN LOVE YOUR ENEMIES

GOSPEL Luke 6:27-38

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, "I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from him who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to every one who begs from you; and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again. And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back."

Reflection

In a world that advises us "the best form of defense is attack" and urges us to "get him before he gets you", Jesus teaches us to love even those who hate us. This is one of the most difficult tenets of the Christian life. But Jesus isn't joking. Love everyone: enemies, haters, and those who curse and abuse us. Loving and forgiving them does more good to us than to the offenders. Jesus offers us the true key to a happy and healthy society. If you want a happy and healthy society, go on loving even when it hurts and even when the other does not deserve it. This is how God loves us. We need to be the channels of God's love and compassion.

GOSPEL Luke 6:20-26

At that time: Jesus lifted up his eyes on his disciples and said: "Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. "Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. "Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh. "Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, on account of the Son of man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. "But woe to you that are rich, for you have received your consolation. "Woe to you that are full now, for you shall hunger. "Woe to you that laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. "Woe to you, when all men speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.

Reflection

The irony of being blessed Hunger, thirst, hatred, weeping, persecution and rejection are not within our of those who are blessed. Jesus however states that those in these states are blessed. Why? When a person in need recognises his dependence on God and actually relies on Him, then he is blessed. This is the heart of the Beatitudes. On the contrary, warning is given to those who are rich, who laugh, who are well-fed and always hear good things about themselves: they have the tendency to feel self-sufficient and declare independence from God. Hell has been described by some as the absence of God; hence to be without God is a woe, while to be with Him and depend on Him is a blessing.

Psalm 119:135
Let your face shine forth on your servant, and teach me your decrees.

GOSPEL Luke 14:25-33

At that time: Great multitudes accompanied Jesus, and he turned and said to them, "If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, 'This man began to build, and was not able to finish.' Or what king, going to

encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy and asks terms of peace. So therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

Reflection

If a politician stands up at a public meeting to address the crowd saying, "Vote for me and if you do, you'll lose your home, property, family and everything else you have!" will you vote for that candidate? True Christian discipleship involves total detachment from everything else but total attachment and adherence to Jesus the Master; following in His footsteps to Calvary by carrying our own daily crosses. Today's GOSPEL speaks of the importance of loyalty and allegiance to Jesus over all other loyalties, including family, self interest and possessions. Jesus wants us to follow Him radically, which would involve leaving our self-centredness and embracing the hard fact that faithfulness to Him might even cost us our life. Let us leave the world and the comforts we have created for ourselves and become disciples of His world so that we gain everything, including eternal life.
