【Official】Name Submissions for Winter Park Eaglets (WPE1 & WPE2)
The Window To Wildlife team, in coordination with the local landowners, is currently inviting the public to submit name suggestions for the two bald eagle eaglets at the Winter Park nest. The final pair of names will be selected by the landowners from the list of community submissions.
These eaglets are being raised by their father, "Atlas," and their resilient mother, "Wink," who continues to thrive and hunt despite having sight in only one eye.
The community has been deeply moved by the growth of WPE1, hatched on January 9th, and the incredible survival of WPE2, who hatched five days later and has overcome significant sibling rivalry with remarkable perseverance.
The submission guidelines require that the names be gender-neutral and proposed together as a pair.
The deadline for all entries is February 17th.
We invite you to share your meaningful name ideas through the official Window To Wildlife Google Form provided below.

I have summarized the official information and expert views regarding "Egg #2," which has been a focus of concern in the nest of Southwest Florida bald eagles, M15 and F23.
◉What will happen to Egg #2?
According to the official SWFEC guidelines, eggs that fail to hatch typically follow these paths:
・The parents will continue to incubate the egg until they eventually give up.
・Once the hatched chick (E26) becomes more active, the unhatched egg is usually ignored.
・The egg may be pushed to the side of the nest or eventually buried under nesting material.
・In some cases, the parents may consume the egg to replenish calcium and energy.
◉Why did it fail to hatch?
Raptor expert Elfruler points out several potential causes:
・Environmental Factors: The egg may have been infertile, suffered from developmental issues of the embryo, or been affected by weather extremes or environmental contaminants.
・The "Capped Shell" Issue: Observation showed that a fragment from E26’s shell had slid over Egg #2, creating a "cap" that lasted for several hours.
This "double shell" could have blocked the microscopic pores of the egg, obstructing the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide/water vapor, which is critical for the chick's survival.
◉Hope in the Nest
While the chances for Egg #2 are unfortunately very slim, E26 is growing stronger every day under the wonderful care of M15 and F23.
Let us continue to watch over the healthy growth of this new life.

Thank you always for watching, for your likes, and for your comments.
I apologize for the delay in sharing this update.
Four days after we posted the egg retrieval video on October 15, a new official statement was released on October 19 by the Port Lincoln Osprey website.
Below is a summary of that announcement.
-----
Sadly, this year’s breeding season on the Port Lincoln Osprey Barge did not go as we had all hoped.
Since 2015, this nest has been home to many successful hatchings, but in nature, even experienced pairs face challenges beyond their control.
The first signs of concern appeared on Thursday, October 9, when the female left the eggs uncovered for about 21 minutes — something rarely seen before.
It was a small but significant change in her usual behavior.
On Friday, October 10, the eggs were left unattended for a total of over one hour.
By Saturday, October 11, that time had increased to six hours and forty-seven minutes, showing clear instability in incubation.
On Sunday, October 12, things improved slightly, but the eggs still remained uncovered for more than an hour.
Then on Monday, October 13, the eggs were left unattended for eight hours and forty-five minutes, and by Tuesday, October 14, they had been uncovered for more than twenty hours.
At that point, the female stopped incubating altogether, even when she was present at the nest.
On Wednesday, October 15, PLO immediately consulted with the Department for Environment and Water (DEW) and several raptor and osprey specialists.
After careful discussion, the three eggs were removed from the nest for examination.
They were flown to Adelaide the same day, where post-mortem analysis confirmed that all three were non-viable.
Each egg contained a well-developed embryo, but there were no signs of hatching activity, and two embryos had already begun to decompose.
In one embryo, spots were found on the liver, and further microscopic analysis is being considered.
If conducted, this deeper examination could take 12–18 months to complete.
The exact cause remains unknown.
Possible contributing factors include the age of the parent birds, fish supply, external disturbances at the nest or fishing grounds, and potential environmental toxins.
PLO will continue monitoring and investigation, aiming to improve conditions and ensure a better outcome next season.
In nature, both success and failure are part of the cycle of life.
We hope that the lessons from this year will help pave the way for new life — and that this nest will once again welcome a season of joy and renewal.
※This information is based on the official statement released by Port Lincoln Osprey on their website.

Information about the Kestrel in Avila, Spain / Courtesy of DIRECT NATURA
The kestrel chick that miraculously survived an eagle attack the other day has now been named!
Yesterday, suggestions for the name were solicited in the live chat, and the name was selected through a vote system from among 10 candidates.
The name that was decided is “PIÑÓN”
The name is Spanish and means "pine nut."
One reason is that the chicks that are born and spend their time in the pine forests resemble pine nuts, and pine nuts are associated with the fertility of descendants.
Of the four birds that suffered this terrible tragedy, only one survived and is now loved by many people who continue to watch over him every day to make sure he grows and stays safe.
Since an eagle's foot has once been on the nest, we cannot say with certainty that it will never return.
But since then, PIÑÓN seems to have become more cautious and learned to hide.
It will be some time before PIÑÓN leaves the nest, but I will continue to keep an eye on him and create and share videos until he is able to fly safely in the sky.

DIRECT NATURA)

About the Kestrel nest in Avila, Spain, courtesy of DIRECT NATURA
As always, thank you so much for watching, liking and commenting.
Recently, a mother bird went missing, and about 24 hours later, 5 chicks, between 10 and 13 days old, were taken in by a conservation center with permission from the national government.
One weeks have passed since then, so I contacted the administrator of DIRECT NATURA to ask what would happen to the chicks next.
The response was “That the 5 chicks would be released from the conservation center but would not return to their original nest.”
※ I was unable to get any further details.
Either way, we will never see those 5 adorable chicks again, but I hope that under the loving care of the recovery center staff, they will continue to grow and soar freely through the skies.
And I hope that the poor dad, who has lost both his precious partner and his babies at the same time, is able to find a new partner as soon as possible.
Sorry for the small amount of information, but I wanted to share it here.
There will likely be mixed opinions, but this is the conclusion reached by the nest managers and the government, so I hope you will understand.
Above all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the staff at DIRECT NATURA for providing me with this precious footage.

I have to share some sad news about the Peregrine Falcon chick at Worcester Cathedral.
The chick were in good health until the evening of the 14th.
However, the next day, the 15th, something strange began to happen.
Avian influenza was suspected after the chick refused to be fed at 2pm.
Chick had also been showing symptoms such as lethargy and loss of appetite over the past 12 hours, starting late at night on the 15th.
As a result, the live stream was stopped immediately.
Then, in an update on the morning of the 16th, it was reported that the chick had died at 8:30 pm on the 15th.
Chick was retrieved and sent, along with its siblings, to a laboratory for analysis.
Peggy and Peter appear to be in good health but will be monitored closely over the coming days and weeks.
The above information is very valuable information received from our viewers.
As a Japanese person, it is difficult for me to obtain any further information, and I am unable to confirm it.
However, I thought this was a truth that everyone who has been watching over this nest should know, so I decided to share it.
Thank you very much to everyone who provided information.
It was truly sad and unbelievable.
I pray for the repose of the souls of the three chicks and for the health of Peter and Peggy.

To all Smalley lovers
I received a wonderful message from Henny de Bruin, Hayabusa team staff and photographer at OLV Toren, so we would like to share it with you!
------------------
The famous Smalley is now installed at Het GroeneHuis and everyone can see him up close.
The installation was private, with only a small group of people present: the two falcon teams, the bell ringer, the taxidermist and the HGH people (no group photos).
I did a little talk about Smalley for the two journalists and the photographer.
The two newspapers that were invited then ran major articles. Not all of them were accurate, but the message that Smalley is now working on HGH was well received.
Smalley is now classified as a "young falcon" without the name Smalley.
The reason for this was that Smalley was a live falcon who played the role of a little hero experiencing exciting adventures on webcam.
This made him a favorite of many people all over the world, who followed his adventures every day.
After his death, this ended, and so did Smalley.
He now serves in an educational role at HGH, showing people what a young falcon looks like up close.
Hopefully, he'll keep playing the role for many more years to come, or at least longer than his 50 days as Smalley.
------------------
Recently, Mom and Dad have been visiting the nest more frequently and spending more time there.
Henny says, "We expect the first egg of the year to be laid within a week. We're excited to see what happens."
I will continue to post videos of the OLV Toren nest, so please keep checking back.

OLV Toren
