Isochromosomes may look simple on a karyotype, but understanding what is actually happening to the chromosome arms can get surprisingly tricky.

The ISCN notation becomes even more interesting when mosaicism and complex structures come into the picture.

In this carousel, we go from a simple i(Xq) to more complex isochromosome examples and break down what each ISCN actually means.

And this Friday at Karyo Club, we’re going deeper into Isochromosomes:

🔹 How they form
🔹 How to recognize them on karyotype
🔹 i(Xq), i(12p), and other clinically important examples
🔹 FISH and microarray interpretation
🔹 Real-world case discussion

5 Ways Karyo Club Can Help You Grow in Cytogenetics

Cytogenetics is a field that keeps evolving. Learning shouldn't stop after a degree or a training program.

At Karyo Club, we are building a space where you can keep learning, discussing and staying connected with the field.

1. Continuous Cytogenetics
LearningRegular discussions on karyotyping, FISH, microarray, ISCN, case studies and other important topics.

2. Career Insights
Explore international opportunities, certifications, career pathways and practical insights for building a career in cytogenetics.

3. Expert Discussions
Learn directly through discussions and interactions with cytogenetics professionals and experts.

4. A Closed Learning Community
A space where you can ask questions, share ideas, discuss cases and learn with others who are interested in cytogenetics.

5. AI in Cytogenetics
Understand how AI, automation and emerging technologies can be used in cytogenetics and laboratory workflows.

One club. Multiple ways to keep learning.

If you're a student, laboratory professional, researcher or simply interested in cytogenetics, Karyo Club is built for continuous learning and discussion.

Genetic Education

A month at the Karyo Club.

This month, we covered a little bit of everything.

We started with the foundations of cytogenetics, moved into a real prenatal case discussion on confined placental mosaicism, explored the growing role of AI in cytogenetics, and wrapped up with an international cytogenetics career discussion & ASCP.

Each session has a different focus.

But the goal remains the same:

Learn cytogenetics beyond the textbook.

Swipe through to see what we explored this month.

And this is just one month.

More live discussions, case studies, practical learning, and career-focused sessions are coming up inside the Karyo Club.

Before you scroll...

did you know someone can have only 45 chromosomes and still be completely healthy?

That's the case with a Robertsonian translocation, a balanced chromosomal rearrangement in which two acrocentric chromosomes fuse together. Because very little essential genetic material is lost, most carriers have no symptoms and may never know they have it.

The challenge often appears during family planning.

Robertsonian translocation carriers have a higher chance of producing eggs or sperm with an unbalanced chromosome complement, which can increase the risk of recurrent miscarriages, infertility, or having a child with a chromosomal condition such as Down syndrome (depending on the chromosomes involved).

A simple karyotype can identify a Robertsonian translocation and provide valuable information for genetic counselling and reproductive planning.

Understanding chromosomes is the first step toward understanding genetics.

Save this post for future reference and share it with someone learning cytogenetics.

Hello everyone,

We hope you and your families are safe.

Due to extreme rainfall, flooding, and severe storm conditions, we experienced a complete disruption of electricity, internet, and communication services. As a result, we were unable to conduct Friday’s class on AI in Cytogenetics.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding.

All Genetic Education activities will resume from tomorrow, provided conditions return to normal. The new date for the AI in Cytogenetics class will be announced soon.

Thank you for your continued support. Stay safe and take care.
