signal den explains finance and investing clearly and independently - with an international view. From compound interest to ETF strategy, we look at how markets, money and incentives work across the US, the UK, the euro area and beyond, and we name the country whenever rules on taxes, regulation or pensions differ.
Four formats: signal basics (the fundamentals), signal explains (how things connect), signal history (market events from around the world) and signal now (current developments in context). Hosted by an AI-generated comic avatar, with subtitles in several languages - always weighing opportunities and risks, never hype.

October 17, 1973: Arab oil producers announce output cuts - an embargo on the US follows within days. By January 1974, oil costs about four times as much.
The lesson: supply shocks don't stay in one market.

"There is no subtler, no surer means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency." (John Maynard Keynes, 1919)
Inflation is a shrinking banknote: the bill looks the same on the outside, but it buys a little less every year.
In the new episode: you put 10,000 dollars in a drawer for ten years, and every bill is still there. With inflation at three percent a year, how much can you still buy? Make your guess, then see the model calculation, plus how headline and core inflation differ and why the gap between interest rate and inflation is what counts.

US inflation accelerated to 3.7% in September, up from 3.4% in August. Economists had expected 3.6%, according to Labor Department data reported by CBS News.
What moved the number: energy prices were up 20.4% from a year earlier, and gasoline rose 9.1% in a single month. Core inflation, which leaves out food and energy, rose from 2.4% to 2.6%.
Why both numbers matter: headline inflation is what you feel at the pump. Core inflation is a rough signal of how broad the price pressure is. With core also moving up, the pressure may not be limited to energy - though one month is a thin basis for conclusions.
Next date on the calendar: the Fed meets on 27-28 October, after raising its target range to 3.75-4.00% in September. Whether it acts again is open.
Which number do you watch more closely: headline or core?

October 6, 1979: in a rare Saturday-evening press conference, Fed chairman Paul Volcker announces a radical shift to fight inflation. The prime rate later hit 21.5% - and inflation finally broke.
The lesson: when a central bank truly commits, markets have to reprice everything.
