Travel Walk Hike Nature Drive Health

On Sunday, October 27th, I joined a group hike on the Old Glossop and B-29 Crash Site circular trail, a 13.2-km loop near Glossop, Derbyshire. This trail is known for its history, breathtaking views, and diverse terrain, making it a fantastic day out for anyone looking to explore this part of the Peak District.

The Walk: Starting from Well Gate, we set off on a moderately challenging route that took us around 4 hours to complete. The trail is popular among hikers, bird watchers, and runners, so we crossed paths with plenty of other people enjoying the crisp autumn day. The initial ascent was steep and challenging, but it rewarded us with some spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

One of the main highlights was reaching the B-29 Crash Site—a solemn and fascinating stop. The remains of the aircraft serve as a tribute to those who lost their lives, and standing there among the wreckage was a humbling experience.

The Terrain and Challenges: The route has a mix of terrain, including muddy sections and slippery, rocky paths, which required some careful footing. The damp autumn weather added to the mud, so sturdy footwear was essential. It’s definitely worth bringing waterproofs, as some areas are quite exposed, and the Peak District weather can be unpredictable.

Facilities:

Parking: There’s a small free car park at the trailhead on Well Gate, but it fills up quickly, so arriving early is a good idea.
Toilets and Pubs: There are no toilets at the car park, but there are a few pubs nearby. After the hike, we stopped at one of these pubs to relax and warm up with a well-deserved drink.

Highlights:

Stunning Views: The elevated sections of the trail offer breathtaking views across the valley and moorland, with autumn colors adding an extra layer of beauty to the landscape.
B-29 Crash Site: This historical site is a poignant stop along the trail, offering a moment for reflection and a unique part of the hike.
Varied Terrain: The mixture of rocky paths, grassy slopes, and muddy patches makes this an interesting and engaging walk that keeps you on your toes.

Final Thoughts: Overall, this hike combines history, natural beauty, and a bit of a physical challenge, making it perfect for a weekend adventure. Although parts of the trail are tough, the stunning scenery and sense of accomplishment make it worth the effort. Whether you're a local or visiting Derbyshire, the Old Glossop and B-29 Crash Site loop is a must-try trail—just be prepared for a bit of mud and pack your waterproofs.
