This week I’m installing an internal French/land drain inside the Tiny Barn — a key step in keeping the old stone walls dry and protecting the new floor build-up.
I cover everything from why the drain is needed, to digging the trench, choosing the right geotextile fabric, what materials to use, and the full step-by-step installation process. If you’re dealing with damp or renovating an older building, this one might really help!

Let me know in the comments if you’ve installed a French drain before — always keen to hear other people’s experiences!

New Video is Live! 🧱
This week’s episode is all about underpinning a stone wall in the Tiny Barn — my first time ever doing it!
It started with a chat with Building Control to figure out exactly what was needed, and then turned into some seriously slow, heavy, and precise work. It’s been one of the toughest parts of the conversion so far, but I’ve learned a huge amount along the way.
If you’re into old buildings, DIY renovation, or just want to see what goes into strengthening the foundations of a stone barn, this one’s for you.
🎥 Watch it here: https://youtu.be/mWpozP6e6Z8?si=fGySz...
Drop a comment if you’ve had to tackle underpinning yourself — I’d love to hear how it went for you!

This week I’ve been digging down inside the Tiny Barn to make space for the new floor layers — MOT/hardcore, damp proof membrane, and the new slab.
What started as “a bit of digging” turned into a full-on battle with hard clay, huge rocks, and a wildly inaccurate guess at how much soil I’ve actually moved 😅.
There’s also a handy little tip for levelling the ground near the end — and, because it wouldn’t be the Tiny Barn without one — yet another setback!

Drop a comment and let me know if my soil estimate sounds even remotely realistic!

In this episode, I’m tackling one of the messiest steps so far — breaking up the old concrete slab using a road breaker (yes, the big hammer!). 💥 Expect dust, noise, muscle, and a few audio mishaps along the way.

A Tiny Barn Conversion in North Wales: The Beginning of Our Journey
Next to our house in the mountains of North Wales stands a tiny stone barn — weathered, rugged, and full of stories. For years it sat quietly, exposed to the wind and rain, its stonework crumbling, being used simply as a dumping ground. To most, it looked like nothing more than a forgotten relic. But to us, it’s the start of an exciting new adventure.
We first discovered the barn when we first viewed our house, it was love at first sight. Despite its worn exterior and wild surroundings, we saw potential — a chance to create something beautiful while preserving the character of the Welsh countryside. Our vision is to breathe new life into this forgotten building and transform it into a cozy, sustainable home that balances rustic charm with modern design.
A First Look
We’ve captured two key photos (attached) of the barn to mark this starting point and a ChatGpt after shot, our vision of what we'd like to create.
Front Aspect (Before & after)
The façade shows the barn’s true age — weathered stone and an industrial doorway that has seen better days. This is our blank canvas, ready to be carefully restored.
Side Aspect (Before & after)
The side view is a tangle of stone and bramble, with nature slowly reclaiming the walls. While rough and overgrown, it hints at the structure’s sturdiness and the potential for future transformation.
These images aren’t just snapshots of a building — they’re the “before” photos of a much bigger story we’re about to tell.
What’s Next
Over the coming months, we’ll be documenting every step of the process: clearing the site, repairing the stonework, designing the interior, and tackling the challenges of creating a tiny yet functional home. It won’t always be easy, but that’s part of the adventure.

This is just the beginning. If you’re curious to see how a neglected Welsh barn becomes a beautiful tiny home, we’d love for you to join us on the journey.
