New Video is Live! 🏠🛠️ https://youtu.be/mQULW-dyk7Q?si=rgzew...

This week I’m installing the Vapour Control Layer (VCL) inside the Tiny Barn — one of those jobs that doesn’t look massively exciting… but makes a huge difference to insulation, airtightness and preventing moisture problems later on.

In the video I cover:
🔹 Why I chose to install a VCL
🔹 The type I used and the overall cost
🔹 Creating airtight seals with butyl tape
🔹 Detailing around skylights and deep window reveals
🔹 My method for fitting the membrane around the old purlins
🔹 A few things I’d definitely change if I did it again 😅

It took a lot longer than expected, but the barn is really starting to feel properly insulated and weather-tight now.

Let me know in the comments — what’s your approach to airtightness in older buildings?

New Video is Live! 🚰🔥 - https://youtu.be/Ey_2q4Wd5yo

Big milestone in the Tiny Barn this week — plumbing is going in and there’s finally heat for the first time in 175 years! 🙌

In this episode I cover everything from choosing 22mm vs 15mm pipe, planning the pipe runs, pressure testing for leaks, and insulating the system… to drilling two huge holes through a 600mm stone wall (which I wisely outsourced!).

There’s also a slightly chaotic moment involving water pouring in 😅 and building a base for the gas bottles.

🎥 Watch it here: https://youtu.be/Ey_2q4Wd5yo

Let me know — would you have gone 22mm or 15mm?

This week I’m insulating the old barn roof using PIR boards — and there’s a lot more to it than just cutting and fitting insulation!

In this episode I cover:
🔹 Preparing the roof properly
🔹 Why airflow is absolutely critical (and how I created it)
🔹 Cutting PIR quickly and accurately
🔹 Using Gapotape for a tight fit
🔹 Installing vapour barriers around skylights and deep windows
🔹 Fitting downlights into PIR
🔹 Sanding and treating the exposed purlins

I also share a couple of things I’ve changed my mind on along the way — because this build is definitely a learning process!

This week I’m tackling one of the biggest structural steps in the Tiny Barn conversion — building a mezzanine floor inside an old stone barn.

The video covers creating padstones for a steel beam, replacing a lintel with structural steel, building a load-bearing stud wall, and even a few handy tips for concrete formwork and scribing floorboards for a tight fit.

It’s been a challenging one, but seeing the space start to work vertically feels like a huge win!

Let me know what you think — and feel free to share any mezzanine or structural tips in the comments!

Big changes to the Tiny Barn this week! I’ve unblocked an old opening to fit a new gable end window and replaced the garage doors with French doors overlooking the mountains — and the difference is huge.

This episode also includes enlarging the doorway, rebuilding sections of the stone wall, making a slate windowsill from scrap, and a bargain scaffolding find… plus a bit of comedy while trying to put it up 😅

Let me know what you think of the transformation — the views are finally doing the barn justice!
