DHAULAGIRI UPDATE 🏔️

Most teams are on hold at Base Camp. Weather has been brutal.

But not everyone is waiting.

Polish extreme skier Andrzej Bargiel is still pushing for history — attempting the first ever ski descent of Dhaulagiri (8,167m).

This will be his 9th 8000m ski without supplementary oxygen. At 38, he has already skied K2, Everest, Broad Peak, and 5 others.

While Autumn 2026 gave Manaslu zero summits and buried Dhaulagiri Base Camp in deep snow, Bargiel managed by Seven Summit Treks is keeping the dream alive.

The mountain is not done yet. Neither is he. ⛷️

A major avalanche has been reported in Himlung Himal (7,126m) in the Manaslu region of Nepal.

According to initial reports from the region, 10 people are missing after the avalanche in Himlung. The incident occurred on the upper slopes above base camp, triggering a massive snow slide visible from surrounding camps.

Rescue and monitoring efforts are underway. Teams in the Manaslu region and local authorities are assessing the situation. Weather conditions and further avalanche risk are being closely monitored.

Himlung Himal, located in the remote Nar-Phu valley on the border of Manaslu and Annapurna regions, is a popular 7000m expedition peak for the Autumn 2026 season. Heavy snowfall and unstable snowpack have increased avalanche risk in recent days.

14 Peaks: When the Impossible Became Possible

For generations, climbing all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks was considered a lifetime achievement.

Jerzy Kukuczka completed them in 7 years, 11 months and 14 days, later followed by Kim Chang-ho with an even faster time. Kukuczka’s legacy went far beyond speed he opened 10 new routes and made 4 first winter ascents on 8,000ers.

Then came Project Possible.

In 2019, Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja completed all 14 peaks in just 6 months and 6 days.

The numbers were extraordinary:

🏔️ 6 × 8,000ers in Nepal — 31 days
🏔️ All 5 × 8,000ers in Pakistan — 23 days
🏔️ Everest → Lhotse → Makalu — 48 hours 30 minutes

But the story wasn't only about speed.

It showcased modern expedition planning, extreme preparation, advanced logistics and, importantly, the strength of a highly experienced Nepali climbing team.

The 2021 first winter ascent of K2 made that impact even more visible, with 10 Nepali climbers reaching the summit together.

Records will eventually be broken.

But trailblazers change the way future generations think about the mountains.

Before Nimsdai, 14 peaks in under a year seemed unimaginable. After Project Possible, people began thinking in months.

The mountains stayed the same. The limits changed.

The Summit Will Wait.

After 2 weeks of non-stop rain & snowfall, Manaslu 2026 Autumn Season has officially ended.

📍 CURRENT SITUATION:
▫️ 3ft fresh snow at Manaslu Base Camp
▫️ 5ft+ snow above Camp 2 & Camp 3
▫️ Zero summits in the only push (Sept 20-23) — all teams returned due to deep snow & avalanche risk

🌧️ WHY CLOSED:
A new weather system from the Bay of Bengal is bringing heavy rain from Sept 25. After a joint assessment, all major operators have officially closed Manaslu Autumn 2026.

📊 SEASON IN NUMBERS:
493 Permits | 41 Teams | 100% Safe Return
Safety remains the true summit.

⛺️ WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW:
All teams are now descending from Base Camp to Samagaun.
Meanwhile, Dhaulagiri expeditions remain on hold at Base Camp, awaiting improvement.

The mountain will always be there. It will wait for the right time.

A DIFFICULT DAY ON MANASLU
On the night of September 19, 2026, an avalanche struck Camp III on Manaslu, claiming the lives of fellow climber Mr. Dhruba Jyoti Guha (Indian-German) and his Sherpa guide, Mr. Fursemba Sherpa.
Our deepest condolences to their families, friends, and the entire climbing community.
This season has brought heavy snowfall and serious avalanche conditions.
All Summit 8000 members are safe and have returned to Base Camp. We have paused movement to higher camps until conditions improve.
The mountain will always be there.
Lives won't.

Why did Gelje Sherpa turn back from Everest at 8,450m?
He had two choices:
🏔️ Keep climbing toward the summit.
🧍‍♂️ Or stop for a stranger who couldn't walk.
He chose the stranger.
This was Ravichandran Tharumalingam - “Ravi,” a 58-year-old Malaysian climber.
"May 18, 2023."
"8,450m."
"The Death Zone."
Ravi was exhausted, dehydrated and unable to continue. He was alone on the fixed rope as other climbers passed.
Then Gelje saw him.
Gelje was guiding a client toward the summit. He had spent years preparing for that climb.
But he stopped.
He helped Ravi onto his back and began carrying him down.
"6 hours."
"600 meters lower."
"Through the Death Zone."
Gelje never reached the summit that day.
But Ravi survived.
Sometimes, the hardest decision on a mountain isn't deciding how high you can climb.
It's deciding when to turn back.
So here's the question:
If you were at 8,450m, would you keep climbing toward the summit or stop for a stranger?
