🚑 A few hours of training can make the difference between life and death.

On 21st June 2026, I had the opportunity to participate in the Basic Life Support (BLS) & Trauma Management Workshop, jointly organized by Help International Welfare Trust (HIWT) and “Revive Live” in Karachi.

Like many healthcare students, I had learned about CPR, trauma management, and emergency response in classrooms. But this workshop reinforced an important reality:

“Knowledge saves lives only when it can be applied under pressure.”

Throughout the hands-on training, we practiced and discussed:

✅ Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

✅ Choking Management (Heimlich Maneuver)

✅ Bleeding Control & Fracture Management

✅ C-Spine Stabilization

✅ Log Roll Technique

✅ Trauma Victim Handling

✅ Heat Stroke Recognition and Emergency Management

One lesson that particularly stood out to me was the importance of early recognition of heat-related emergencies.

Heat exhaustion can rapidly progress to heat stroke, a true medical emergency. Learning to identify warning signs such as dizziness, excessive sweating, confusion, altered mental status, and changes in vital signs can significantly improve patient outcomes.

Another valuable takeaway was the structured “DRS ABCD approach”.

🔹 Breathing

🔹 Circulation

🔹 Defibrillation

In emergency situations, having a systematic approach helps transform panic into purposeful action.

What impressed me most was that the workshop went beyond theory. We practiced real-life scenarios involving CPR, airway management, choking response, cervical spine precautions, and tourniquet application…skills that every healthcare professional should be confident in performing.

As future healthcare providers, we often focus on diagnosing and treating diseases. Yet sometimes, the most important intervention happens in the first few minutes before a patient reaches a hospital.

📌A timely chest compression, a properly managed airway, or a correctly applied tourniquet can save a life.

Grateful to the organizers, trainers, and fellow participants for creating an interactive learning environment that emphasized both competence and confidence in emergency care.

Because when emergencies happen, people don't need spectators.
They need someone who knows what to do ⛑️👩‍⚕️
