Luzon: STY Mangkhut (locally named
as “Ompong”)

Typhoon Mangkhut, also known as Typhoon Ompong in the Philippines, was a devastating storm that hit the country in 2018. It made landfall in Cagayan, northern Philippines, with winds of up to 205 km/h, making it one of the strongest storms to hit the country since Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 ¹.

*Impact:*

- At least 127 people died, and over 5.7 million were affected
- Widespread destruction, including damaged homes, infrastructure, and agriculture
- Estimated damages of PHP33.9 billion (US$626.8 million)
- Over 105,000 families evacuated from their homes

Typhoon Pablo, also known as Bopha, was a devastating storm that hit the Philippines in 2012. It made landfall on December 4, 2012, in Mindanao, bringing winds of up to 175 mph (282 km/h) and causing widespread destruction.

- _Death Toll_: Over 1,900 people were killed, with many more missing
- _Affected Population_: More than 6.2 million people were affected, with 179,000 seeking refuge in evacuation centers
