Many are the times you are told to reduce your salt intake by your doctor, but how much salt reduction should you make? And also, how much salt is normal? and how much is too much?

A normal salt intake in an adult is less than 5 grams, which equates to one teaspoon of salt per day.
If you are hypertensive, diabetic or have a kidney disease, your daily intake of salt should be less than 2grams, this equates to less than half a teaspoon.

In order to follow these instructions without actually measuring it on a teaspoon, you can proceed as follows:
1. Add salt just enough to taste
2. No added salt to meals. This means that when the food is cooked and ready, no extra salt is needed.
3. Avoid processed foods like chips, salted meat, canned food, bread, biscuits, etc These have a high salt content.

Why do we stress so much on moderating salt intake?
1. It raises your blood pressure
2. Increases your chances of developing heart disease and stroke
3. It can wear off your healthy kidneys, among others.
