World Dance Day, officially known as International Dance Day, was established in 1982 by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute ITI, which is the main partner for performing arts at UNESCO. It is celebrated annually on April 29th.

The Date's Origin: April 29th was chosen to commemorate the birth anniversary of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810). A French dancer and ballet master, Noverre is considered the "father" or creator of modern ballet (specifically ballet d’action).
The Proponent: While the ITI Dance Committee officially founded the day, the initiative was proposed by the Russian ballet figure and professor Pyotr Gusev to honour Noverre’s legacy as a reformer of dance.

Founding Purpose: The day was created to raise public awareness about the importance and value of dance as an art form and to encourage governments to include dance in their education systems.
Annual Global Message: Since its inception, an outstanding dance personality is selected each year to write an official message that is circulated worldwide. The first message in 1982 was delivered by Henrik Neubauer.

Universality: To celebrate dance as a universal language that crosses political, cultural, and ethnic barriers.
Education: To promote dance in all its forms and increase participation through workshops, festivals, and school events.
Recognition: To act as a "wake-up call" for institutions and governments that have not yet recognized dance's potential for economic growth and individual well-being.

Dol Utsav, or Dol Jatra, is a vibrant Bengali spring festival celebrated on Full Moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Phalguna, coinciding with Holi. It honors Radha and Krishna, featuring processions with idols on decorated swings (dols), devotional music, and the playing of colors (abir). It marks the end of the Bengali year and is a major cultural event in West Bengal, Assam, and Odisha, often called Basanta Utsav in Shantiniketan.
