Have you ever started Dharma practice with pure devotion… only to watch that devotion slowly disappear because of one small change in your life?
--- How one should carry regular thoughts
Generally speaking, when we give thought towards Dharma, it is natural that devotion to Dharma, trust in the Triple Gem and interest in Dharma develop in us. Similarly, when we think about Dharma in this life and lives to come, a special connection to Dharma is naturally established. In contrast, when we focus our mind on non-virtuous things, by getting accustomed to wrong notions, our mind will fail to turn towards Dharma, let alone practice.
For instance, only black grains will grow from the seeds of black grain. Similarly, when the seeds of white grain are sown, only white grains will germinate from them. Therefore, it is imperative that one should have the seed of virtue in one’s mental continuum. As a foundation, if you have the seed of virtue, you will have a disposition and devotion towards Dharma. Without this you will not have this disposition, devotion and admiration for the Dharma. In some cases, even though you have devotion for Dharma, a sudden change in conditions will snatch it from you. In other cases, obstacles due to the presence of Mara will cause sudden changes to take place in your devotion.
In ancient times, two hermits were performing retreat together in a cave. At a time when they were about to complete their retreat practice, a local mara, a Tsen, and a devil, Gyalpo, went there. They exchanged opinions and finally agreed they should create obstacles for the practitioners. Local maras, known as Tsen, are usually straightforward and relatively kind-hearted - they are not evil-minded. At a time when one of the hermits went out to answer a call of nature, he was thrown down the precipice of a rocky mountain. However, the hermit was drawn up to Sukhavati instead.
In contrast, the devils known as Gyalpo, are evil-hearted and ungrateful. Therefore, when one of the hermits was performing a Hundred Torma offering ritual, in place of normal puffed grain, by means of his psychic power the devil added only fresh grains. The hermit threw grains and torma water out the window. Due to the devil’s psychic power, the grains grew at the spot where the torma and grains had been dropped.
The hermit, seeing the growing grain, added more soil to the spot. As a result he enjoyed a good harvest, with the land becoming fertile. Then the hermit decided that he could not look after the field alone. He thought he should have a companion, and so took a woman as his life partner. Both worked hard, digging the soil of a rather big piece of land and carried on their farming. They enjoyed good harvests. In the course of time, his wife gave birth to many offspring. Now they started encountering problems and the hermit finally realized that they had already been roaming in ocean-like samsara. He knew that his thoughts had gone astray. In the beginning, though you may have devotion, at the end your devotion will be snatched away in this manner.
After some time, when the mara and devil met each other, the mara said, “Gyalpo, you have not been able to kill that person yet. I had already killed him long before.” The devil Gyalpo said, “Your act of killing has been ineffective, he has gone to Sukhavati,” and further added, “I have made him sink endlessly into an abyss of samsara, with no chance of attaining a higher realm, let alone a state of liberation.”
An immediate condition has an effect like this. Obviously, in the beginning one may have ambiguous thoughts about whether one should enter the path of Dharma or not. Even if one embarked on the path of Dharma, sometimes immediate conditions change one’s mind. Therefore, in order to carry out proper dharma practice one must have a good foundation. If you have a genuine interest in Dharma, the nature of this interest is to develop a strong devotion to the Triple Gem, which is very important. Thus, it is essential to first foster devotion and a disposition towards the Buddha.
Ordained at eleven. More than forty years in robes. At Ngor Monastery in the Himalayas he learned to lay the sand mandalas, sculpt the tormas and lead the sacred chants; before the throne-holders of Sakya he received the heart of the lineage. The four foundations — four hundred thousand repetitions of each.

At Ngor Monastery in the Himalayas he learned to lay sand mandalas, sculpt tormas and lead the sacred chants; before the throne-holders of Sakya he received the heart of the lineage. Four hundred thousand repetitions of each of the four foundations.
This monk from Ladakh is coming to live at Shri Bodhi Dharma.
This is to certify that Ven. Lopon Jamyang Skarma La, son of Dorjey, born on 25 December 1972, is a bonafide and residential monk of Mangtro Thubten Shaling Choskhor Monastery, situated at Matho, Leh, UT Ladakh, India.
He took monkhood at the age of eleven and joined Ngor Monastery to study the art of performing rituals, the art of making mandalas and tormas, and the playing of melodious spiritual musical tunes.
He received his novice vow from H.E. Luding Khen Chen Rinpoche. He has also received many sacred and important empowerments, oral transmissions and explanations of the Sakya lineage from the three high lamas of the Sakya tradition — led by His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin, supreme head of the Sakya sect of Tibetan Buddhism, and H.E. Chogye Trichen Rinpoche — and from many other great masters including H.E. Luding Khenchen Rinpoche and H.E. Luding Khen Rinpoche.
After completing all his studies, he served Mangtro Monastery for several consecutive years as chanting master, teacher and discipline master.
He has also undergone various retreats and practices on eminent deities such as Bhutadamara, Hevajra, Vairocana and Yamantaka, and the Ngöndro preliminary practice — important and imperative for a practitioner — completing four hundred thousand repetitions of each of the foundations. From earlier until now he has been participating in the work and service at Mangtro Monastery.
Shri Bodhi Dharma warmly welcomes Ven. Lopon Jamyang Skarma as Resident Monk of our centre.
Our own experience shows us that this Vairocana puja ritual is powerful. When persons are very sick in great pain and agony, it is uncertain if they will survive. If the ritual is performed and the initiation is given to them, then those who can survive quickly recover. But if there is no chance, they pass away right after receiving the initiation rather than further endure their current illness. So, we know this ritual has great blessing and power.
It is certain that anyone who is born will die. There is no doubt about it. Not a single person who was born did not or will not die. Regardless of our wishes, we will face death. And when we die, we go through a critical time.
There are two types of beings who do not experience the bardo: First, very superior practitioners—through their phowa practice—can transfer their consciousness directly to the buddha fields. Second, those with heavy negative karma do not experience the bardo. Instead, right after death, they fall directly into the lower realms. Except in these two extreme cases, the consciousness of most beings will leave their body after death and enter the bardo.
In the bardo, beings lack a physical body because they have no parents. Therefore, a bardo being has only a mental body. This mental body has no organs per se but can still hear, see, and smell. This state causes them great fear and anxiety. With no certainty, the mental body is just like a feather blown around by wind. Wherever the wind of karma blows, it goes there. Since it has no physical body, it travels very fast. It can even travel through walls and mountains. The places where the mental body will go are completely uncertain. Sometimes those places are very beautiful, sometimes they are very fearful, and sometimes they are very ugly. Moreover, there is uncertainty as to companions and food. Since bardo beings lack a solid body, they cannot eat solid food but can smell food to have some satisfaction. Sometimes food smells like nectar; other times though, it smells like awful burning iron. So, there is complete uncertainty of food.
Because bardo beings have great fear and anxiety, they have an uncertainty of refuge too. They are unsure about from whom they can seek help. Due to this, there is uncertainty of thoughts. Virtuous, non-virtuous, and indifferent thoughts constantly arise for them. Their mental consciousness goes everywhere instantly and constantly. Without a physical body, bardo beings have no white or red elements inside their bodies. Due to this, there is no sun or moon outside; they cannot see the sun or moon. Also, bardo beings have no shadows, fingerprints, or physical impressions. Their mind is subtler than our mind, so they have a level of contaminated clairvoyance; bardo beings can read the minds of others. As such, it is important for us living beings to generate loving-kindness, compassion, and kind thoughts for the deceased. Otherwise, since bardo beings can read our mind, our negative thoughts can cause them great pain, anxiety, and anger—which is very harmful for them.
Bardo beings experience death and rebirth every week. They also have varied lifespans. Some spend a brief time in the bardo, while others remain in the bardo for eons. On average though, beings remain in bardo for seven weeks or forty-nine days. During the first four weeks, bardo beings experience the appearances and propensities of their immediate past life. The fourth week is the turning point. After that, appearances resemble their next life. After the seventh week, most bardo beings are born in one of the six realms of saṃsāra.
Bardo beings experience seven fearful conditions. The first four are terrifying sounds of the four elements. When the earth element absorbs into the water element, there is a sound of whole mountains cracking apart. When the water element absorbs into the fire element, there is a sound like the terrible shaking of all the oceans. When the fire element absorbs into the wind element, there is a sound like the great fire at an eon’s end. And when the wind element dissolves into the consciousness, there is a very terrifying, loud sound of wind, just like the windstorm at an eon’s end. Also, three terrifying cliffs of the three lower realms are experienced. They have edges of knives that are very fine and steep, for thousands of miles downward. These cliffs are the manifestation of one’s own three defilements—desire, aversion, and ignorance.
When beings have these fears, it is important to perform rituals such as the Vairocana puja to give them great blessings and to relieve them of suffering. In general, a living being’s mind when dreaming is seven times subtler than when awake. For bardo beings, their mind is seven times subtler than a living being’s mind when dreaming. Since bardo beings are not bound by a physical body, if they meet the right methods, they can swiftly attain realization.
This is why this ritual is so precious — it helps the living and especially benefits the deceased, purifying negative deeds and saving beings from lower realms.

Shri Bodhi Dharma
Have you ever started Dharma practice with pure devotion… only to watch that devotion slowly disappear because of one small change in your life?
---
How one should carry regular thoughts

Shri Bodhi Dharma
