THE FIRST DAYS OF LENT — A PEOPLE WHO RETURN, A GOD WHO RELENTS

The first days after Ash Wednesday (Jonah 3–4, Isaiah 58 again, Romans 1, Matthew 18) deepen the theme of return.

Jonah 3 shows an entire city turning back to God — and God relenting from destruction. Jonah 4 shows Jonah angry about God’s mercy, revealing how hard it is for us to accept that God’s compassion is wider than our categories.

Romans 1 introduces Paul’s sweeping vision of the gospel — the power of God for salvation to all who believe. Matthew 18 reminds us that the kingdom belongs to the humble, the small, the ones who know their need.

These early days of Lent teach us that repentance is not a punishment; it is a gift.

It is the doorway back into life.

ASH WEDNESDAY — RETURNING TO THE GOD WHO REMEMBERS DUST

Lent begins not with our strength, but with our frailty.

With a thumbprint of ash, we hear the truth spoken aloud:

“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

The readings for Ash Wednesday set the tone for the entire season. Joel calls out:
“Return to the LORD, your God,
who is gracious and merciful, slow to anger,
and abounding in steadfast love.” (Joel 2:13)

This is the first movement of Lent:
returning.

Not performing.
Not proving.
Not pretending.
Returning.

Joel imagines a people who have wandered so far that they barely remember the sound of God’s voice.

Isaiah 58 presses even deeper, exposing the ways religious people can use piety to avoid justice. God says through the prophet:

“Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of injustice…
to share your bread with the hungry…?” (Isaiah 58:6–7)

Lent begins with a God who refuses empty gestures and instead calls us back to the heart of things — mercy, honesty, justice, humility.

Psalm 51 becomes our prayer:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God.” (Psalm 51:10)

And Jesus, in Matthew 6, redirects our gaze inward. He warns us not to practice righteousness for show, not to fast for applause, not to give for recognition. Lent is not a performance; it is a homecoming.

Ash Wednesday teaches us that the journey begins with truth-telling:
We are dust. We are loved. We are called home.
