Classic Soundtracks & Cover Versions

This channel is dedicated to the Western classical orchestral film music. Primarily, we present classics from the mid-1930s to the early 1980s. Silent film music is not neglected either. We also include a selection of albums with cover versions.

In addition to our own music videos, which we are gradually uploading here, our programme is mainly based on numerous playlists of film music from other channels that officially made this music available.

The emphasis of our soundtrack selection is based on our personal taste. We prefer titles in the symphonic-orchestral range, from genuine classics to insider tips. These criteria mean that we choose practically no works of the recent past and tend to avoid certain genre soundtracks.

We hope you enjoy browsing through our treasure trove of film music.

Classic Soundtracks & Cover Versions

Hello Film Music Friends,

I'm interrupting the Morricone cycle for a short interlude with some other film music gems by a couple of very notable composers: Max Steiner, Ron Goodwin, Leith Stevens, Richard Rodney Bennett, Georges Delerue, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Maurice Jarre, and some Laurie Johnson, too. Then I'll wrap up the Maestro cycle; presenting all the remaining film scores and recordings of his which are officially available on YouTube – at least for now. Stay tuned and enjoy the music.

P.S.: Have a listen to "La Jetée" and watch the background videos. If you like you may also read my brief description to the playlist there. By the way, if you haven't already seen Chris Marker's film, you really should. It's that fascinating.

Classic Soundtracks & Cover Versions

Hi lovers of great film music,

The ongoing Morricone cycle is in full swing. Since my last community post, Parts VI, VII, VIII, IX and X have been released to the public. Now, Part XI is in preparation, while Part XII has already been finished a couple of months ago, that one will not go live until Part XI is ready and out.

In total, there will be hours and hours of great Morricone music to dig in for you. You will spend days if not weeks or months to get through all of this. The catalogue of the Maestro’s oeuvre is so large, and, as you might know, not even every Morricone film score is currently available on YouTube. So, there are limits to this Anthology that are beyond my control. A few gems are missing, or, are just represented through one or two bits. However, what there is included in this monumental Morricone Anthology gives you more than enough material to learn about and enjoy every aspect of that man’s genius and creativity in the musical field.

Furthermore, such a free of cost Anthology project on YouTube, all in honour of Ennio Morricone’s legacy, could not have been done in a similar way for any other film composer. The reason is not that these men wouldn’t be worthy of it, it’s just simply a matter of unavailable material. – There are Herrmann and Korngold. But their output is tiny compared to the Italian Maestro. Also, these two composers mostly profit today from new recordings as their original recordings are either missing or just unavailable, not even to speak of the archival sound quality. Or take John Williams or John Barry. It wouldn’t even be nearly possible either as the many gabs on YouTube in their oeuvre are far too big.

On the bottom line, we are extremely fortunate that the number of Morricone scores – all officially uploaded – now available on YouTube is just staggering. You don’t have that anywhere else in the realm of film music.

Morricone Anthology 1956 – 2016 (News, October 13, 2024)

This is truly a monumental Anthology for all the fans of the Maestro and for those who want to discover the vast catalogue of his film music works.

The anthology gives you broad variety of selections from nearly all of Morricone’s film and television scores. Even songs performed at Italian TV shows as well as some rare music for the stage are included. However, if there’s no officially uploaded video of his work (or at least a sort of semi-official video that’s in acceptable audio quality) on YouTube I’ve decided to pass on the score all together may it be as important as it gets. But fear not, there is enough music to spend hours and hours with the musical genius of Ennio Morricone.

In total, there will be 12 Parts of this Anthology. Generally, each part gives you a good impression of Morricone’s output during a specific five-year time frame (exceptions are Part I, II and XII which present different time spans merely for practical reasons). Also note, that some Anthology Parts had to be divided again in separate volumes because YouTube can’t properly handle playlists that contain 200+ videos! You may have noticed that already when listening to the original Part IV which had 417 videos in it – it’s now broken-up into three volumes.

At present, there are five volumes online – and seven more to come. Part I focusses on Morricone’s work as an arranger and conductor of film and television songs written by other artists. Part II brings you the film music Morricone composed in the years 1962-1964. Part III covers the years of 1965 to 1969 and so on. Check out the playlist section of my channel for all the upcoming parts.

Classic Soundtracks & Cover Versions

During the last couple of months, I’ve created more than 600 new playlists focussing on European film music for a change with various classic soundtrack albums as well as other film music related studio albums or compilations.

Currently, there are in total over 1,200 different playlists available for you on my channel “Classic Soundtracks & Cover Versions.” Actually, there should be more, but while systematically checking my older playlists created years ago, I’ve noticed that some officially uploaded soundtracks are no longer available. For example, all the marvellous Tadlow Music recordings (“The Guns of Navarone,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Is Paris burning?” etc.) are gone now.

Furthermore, the British record label Silva Screen is apparently now under the umbrella of Universal Music Group, all their previously uploaded soundtrack albums have vanished – but Universal has at least re-uploaded most of those recorings. Unfortunately, the highly popular “The Ipcress File” by John Barry is still absent. Hopefully it will be made available soon again.

Additionally, YouTube’s search engine that I’ve recommended to be used in order to find specific contents within my channel doesn’t work as it should. Some playlists of mine can’t be found through that tool, even though those lists are there. So, if you are not on a hurry just scroll through the entire playlists of mine. – In a way, it’s like in the old times, when you went through CD or LP bins in brick and mortar stores. That used to be fun, especially when they really had good stuff in it.

By the way, regarding all those playlists that can’t be found with the search engine I will try to replace them with new playlists, in the hope they might finally be searchable. Who knows, it might even work.

Just a quick info for those of you who kindly left comments to my videos during the last two or three years. You, might have wondered what has happened to them.

Unfortunately, they never went live. Here is why:

I didn't censor them. I just haven't figured out where they can be found in my “YT Studio” until very, very recently when I've stumbled on a few unpublished ones in one of my other channels. Only then I’ve realized how this system with comments that must be reviewed first before going live actually works.—Oh, well. In all those years I've just wondered from time to time why no one cared to post any comment.—Obviously, some of you did. Now, the thing is, those comments get automatically deleted by YT after 65 days if they are not greenlit. I didn't know that either. So, all those older comments are sadly lost, i.e. those which have been posted before January 2024. I regret that immensely.

From now on, all your new comments will immediately go live. I’ve changed the settings to all my videos in order to enable this.
