Ready Steady Excel
Hatching Twitter was recommended by Casey Neistat in a podcast I heard recently. Interesting read so far. Amazing how a simple idea that started before smart phones has now become what it is today.

📊 BODMAS vs. PEMDAS in Excel: What You Need to Know! 🧮
Ever wondered why Excel calculates your formulas the way it does? 🤔 It’s all about order of operations — and that’s where BODMAS and PEMDAS come in!
🔹 BODMAS (used in the UK and many Commonwealth countries):
- Brackets
- Orders (powers, roots)
- Division
- Multiplication
- Addition
- Subtraction
🔹 PEMDAS (commonly used in the US):
- Parentheses
- Exponents (powers, roots)
- Multiplication
- Division
- Addition
- Subtraction
💡 In Excel, both rules apply the same way — Excel follows this order when calculating formulas.
🧠Tip: Excel will first calculate whatever is in brackets or parentheses. See scenario below:
💼 Scenario in Excel:
A2 = Hourly rate: £15
B2 = Hours worked: 8
C2 = Bonus: £20
=A2*B2+C2
The answer to this will be £140 because Excel will do the Multiplication first, £15*8hrs which is £120 and then Add the £20 bonus. This is because Multiplication comes before Addition in BODMAS or PEMDAS.
By using the brackets in the right place , you will get the correct answer.
=A2*(B2+C2)
The answer to this will be £420 because Excel will do whatever is in the brackets or parentheses first. 8hrs + £20 = 28, then multiply this by £15.
As you can see, missing out the brackets can make a huge difference.
