Darbha mat and rope procession for Srivari Brahmotsavam
Tirumala, September 22, 2025: The Darbha mat and rope used for hoisting the flag during the Srivari Salakatla Brahmotsavam were brought to the Srivari temple from the TTD Forest Department office on Monday by DFO Sri Phani Kumar Naidu and staff in a procession.
Later, the mat and rope made of Darbha were placed on the Sheshavahanam in the Ranganayakula Mandapam of the Srivari temple. These will be used in the Dhwajarohanam to be held on the 24th of this month from 5.43 pm to 6.15 pm in Meenalagnam.
Darbha mat and rope are crucial for the Dhwajarohanam
The Dhwajarohanam is held to signal the beginning of the Brahmotsavam. On this occasion, the Garuda flag is hoisted on the flagpole and the three hundred deities are invited to the Brahmotsavam. The devotees wrap the Darbha mat around the flagpole with Vedic mantras. The rope made of Darbha is tied to the flagpole. The TTD Forest Department prepares these 10 days in advance. There are two types of Darbha, Shiva Darbha and Vishnu Darbha, while Vishnu Darbha is used in Tirumala.
For this, the TTD forest staff collected Vishnu Darbha from Chelluru village in Yerpedu mandal. It was brought to Tirumala and dried in low sunlight for a week, cleaned thoroughly, and the mat and rope were made. The forest staff prepared a Darbha mat measuring 22 feet long, seven and a half feet wide, weighing 60 kg, and a rope measuring 255 meters long and weighing 106 kg.
Darbha Vaishishtyam
Darbha (Kusa grass) is considered to be the most sacred plant in the Vedic scriptures. The Rigveda says "Kusaha pavitra bhavatu" which describes Darbha as purifying, while the Yajurveda states that sitting on Darbhasana gives the best results. Scientifically, it is rich in silica, which purifies the atmosphere and eliminates micro-organisms. Therefore, the use of Darbha in Vedic rituals is considered a divine boon.
