Exactly 250 years ago today, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, declaring to the world that they had broke away from Great Britain.

Reading, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, and that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness."

The document concluded with the defiant decree that "These United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown."

Had these men failed, they would have all been hanged for treason, but instead the greatest experiment in human history began.

Exactly 250 years ago today, 12 British Colonies voted to break away from Great Britain.

On June 7th, 1776, Virginian Statesman Richard Henry Lee proposed a document that would change history forever: The Lee Resolution.

It reads "Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.

That it is expedient forthwith to take the most effectual measures for forming foreign Alliances.

That a plan of confederation be prepared and transmitted to the respective Colonies for their consideration and approbation."

Because Continental Congress voted to adopt the Lee Resolution, John Adams famously predicted that July 2nd would be celebrated by future generations as the "great anniversary Festival." Although the celebration eventually shifted to July 4th, everyone should remember this massive 250th Milestone.
