This week, MANAGE-FISHub highlights an important seafood safety innovation under “𝐅𝐈𝐒𝐇𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤” — 𝑪𝑰𝑭𝑻𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝑹𝒂𝒑𝒊𝒅 𝑫𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑲𝒊𝒕𝒔, developed by ICAR–Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), Kochi.

Fish adulteration is a major concern, using harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde (formalin) and ammonia sometimes illegally used to extend shelf life and maintain the appearance of fish. These substances pose serious health risks to consumers and are associated with toxic and carcinogenic effects.

CIFTest kits provide a simple, rapid, and portable solution to detect harmful adulterants such as formaldehyde and ammonia in fresh fish. Using paper strip-based colorimetric technology, the kit enables on-site detection within minutes, ensuring safe seafood for consumers and supporting effective food safety monitoring.
