Sometimes I genuinely wish music was just music, with nothing else behind it.

And I don’t mean that in a bad way, because if I didn’t care about the artists, I wouldn’t even be into K-pop or J-pop like this. But at the same time, I feel like when you listen to music, being aware of everything happening with the artists shouldn’t be necessary… yet in these industries it feels unavoidable.

Sometimes I really wish there were just songs. No drama. No scandals. No fandom wars. No pressure. No constant issues. No hiatuses because of health reasons.

Because the truth is, almost every time I stan a group or even just start really liking an artist, something goes wrong.

The amount of hiatuses, especially because of mental health, is honestly concerning. And I would never hate an idol for taking a break, god forbid. If you need rest, take it. Your health should always come first. But it’s still sad how often these breaks happen because companies push idols too far, overwork them, or just don’t treat them like human beings.

And then there are the cases where members just disappear. They leave, get kicked out, or suddenly aren’t part of the group anymore. And again, I respect it, because health and personal life should always be the priority. But there are also so many situations where the company handles everything completely wrong, and it just makes the whole thing feel unfair.

What I’m trying to say is: as unrealistic as it sounds, I sometimes wish there could just be music. Nothing else behind it. No drama. No stress. Just songs and performances.

Over the years my taste has expanded a lot. I still mainly listen to K-pop, but I’ve also started digging into nugu and underrated artists, and recently I’ve been getting into J-pop, T-pop, and other Asian artists too.

But because of that, I’ve reached a point where I’m aware of way too many boycotts. And the fact that boycotts are even needed this often is just… disturbing. Like why is this so normal in these industries?

The reason I’ve been thinking about this today is because I was looking into what’s happening with ME:I, a J-pop group formed through Produce 101 Japan Season 3. Four members basically disappeared, and I didn’t even know what happened. I still don’t fully know how to explain the whole situation, but if anyone wants context, I’d recommend this video:

And what makes it even worse is that ME:I is connected to another group called IS:SUE, which is literally my favorite J-pop group. They share the same company, and after reading more about the ME:I situation, I realized that a lot of fans are boycotting the entire company, which includes IS:SUE too.

And it’s just frustrating because I was finally happy that IS:SUE became a full-member group again after Rin was on hiatus for over a year… and now it’s like another mess starts right when things finally feel normal.

It also made me think about another situation that, in my opinion, is even worse: the MADEIN case. I was genuinely so excited for that group, but now they’re involved in a massive boycott too and everything about it is just messed up.

And honestly, sometimes I start disliking my own music taste, because I feel like I have the worst luck ever with groups and biases.

It’s like whenever I get into a group, something happens. It doesn’t always have to be as extreme as MADEIN, but still.

For example, Gaeun was my bias even back in Limelight (before MADEIN). Then there’s Rami, who’s my bias/bias wrecker, and she might not even come back from hiatus. And my history with biases is actually insane: Jinni from NMIXX, Soojin from (G)I-DLE, Garam from LE SSERAFIM, Chaey from CRAXY, Hyunny from VVUP… and that’s not even all of them.

And it’s not just individual idols either. it’s whole groups and companies too. Lapillus’ company shut down. TRI.BE’s company went bankrupt. SPIA silently disbanded. CRAXY hasn’t posted a long video in 11 months, hasn’t posted shorts since December, and hasn’t released music since July 2024, so now I’m genuinely scared for them too.

At this point I don’t even know what the original point of this rant was anymore. I think it started with me feeling like I hate my own taste because I always get unlucky, and then it turned into me realizing how much drama and mess the industry constantly holds.

I just wish it could be simpler. I wish it could just be music.
