It’s More Than Just Money

Today is my 36th birthday, and I thought about the advice I would give myself if I were starting out again. To be honest, these are the same lessons I hope to share with my children when they are older. I believe they will save them years of mistakes and help them build meaningful wealth and freedom.

Life has not been linear. I was raised under difficult circumstances, surrounded by responsibility at a young age. I have experienced loss, confusion, low self esteem, peer pressure, grief, and seasons where survival mattered more than ambition. I have also experienced growth, opportunity, clarity, and the slow confidence that comes from choosing to keep going even when quitting would have been easier.

What I have learned over the years is that if you want to build wealth and independence, you have to respect process. There are no shortcuts that do not come with consequences. While it is possible to succeed starting later in life, starting early gives you an unfair advantage because you are willing to learn while others are distracted. Your early years are for experimentation, failure, learning, and building skill. If you are past that stage, there is still hope, but you must be honest about where you are and commit fully to the work ahead.

Another lesson that shaped my thinking is this: do not do what you love, do what people need. Passion alone does not pay bills. People do not reward you for enjoyment, they reward you for solving problems. Identify a real need, solve it well, and the market will pay you. Love can grow later once the business is sustainable.

Whatever business you choose, it must not be easy to duplicate. If anyone can wake up tomorrow and do exactly what you do with no barrier to entry, you do not have a business, you have a hustle. A real business respects process, has entry restrictions, and gives the operator control. It should be difficult to get into, difficult to copy, and easy to expand once you are inside.

Control is critical. You should never find yourself at the mercy of individuals, officials, or gatekeepers who can shut your livelihood down at will. Your business must exist because people need it, not because someone is allowing it to exist. Control your marketing, your product, and your distribution. If you cannot control these, you are vulnerable.

If you want to grow wealth, you must understand scale. Know how many units you need to sell or deliver to reach your financial goals. Understand pricing and magnitude. Serving many people at a fair price creates wealth. Serving fewer people at a higher price can create wealth faster. When scale and magnitude work together, growth accelerates.

Time is one of the most important assets you have. Do not sell it cheaply. If your business consumes all your time and cannot function without you, it is not a business, it is a prison. Build systems. Train people. Pay them well. Allow the business to grow independently of your presence. Also understand that debt is a thief of time. Luxuries bought on credit will force you to work when you should be resting. Use debt carefully and preferably for assets that produce cash flow.

These are not theories. These are lessons earned through experience, mistakes, and repetition.

If you have read this far, I salute you. Do not rush the process. Do not take shortcuts. Just build.

Happy birthday to me. Still learning. Still building.

It’s More Than Just Money

It is my 36th birthday today and as it is my custom, I took time to reflect on my life and write down some of the things I have learned over the years. I came up with a list of 36 things I have learned over the past 36 years and I’d like to share my list with you:

1. Family is not always blood, better is the neighbour next door than a brother who is 600 km away.

2. Don’t chase cheap popularity. If you put in enough work you will be noticed in the right way.

3. Don’t reveal your plans too early, always get strong enough to defend yourself before you announce.

4. The worst thing you can do is marry the wrong person, the best best thing you can do is divorce them as soon as you find out what they’re up to.

5. This too shall pass. Even good things come to an end. While enjoying good, be prepared for times that might be tough. Bad things also come to an end, so prepare to enjoy the good times.

6. No one is coming to save you, they’re busy saving themselves. Save yourself.

7. Nothing will work unless you work.

8. Nothing last forever, learn to enjoy the seasons of life.

9. It doesn’t matter how many ideas you have, it only matters how many ideas you execute.

10. Relationships are better than money. If you look after and nourish them, they will bring wealth to you.

11. People do business with people that they like, so learn to be a likeable person.

12. Money DOES grow on trees, those trees are called ideas. If you cultivate and act on enough of your ideas you will make money.

13. People can sing your praise today and they can plan your downfall tomorrow.

14. Give everyone a chance to prove themselves but cut all ties when they refuse to meet you halfway.

15. Don’t chase money. Build value within yourself. If you are a valuable person you will attract money.

16. Youth is temporary. You will not be young forever. Make use of every opportunity that comes your way while you still have the vitality and strength to do so.

17. Laziness will take away your confidence and momentum. Don’t stay away from your work too long, you might forget how it’s Done.

18. Your friends today might not be your friends tomorrow. Friendships can be seasonal, where are your friends from primary school? Watch for those who might be your lifetime friends.

19. If you don’t learn to manage what you have, you will lose it to those who know how to manage.

20. Don’t be desperate, people run away from desperate people.

21. Don’t visit people and overstay your welcome. Learn how to read the signs and leave when they need their space.

22. The help that you are giving to someone today does not guarantee that they will help you back tomorrow, it also does not guarantee that they will be grateful.

23. Expect nothing from no one. If they do something for you, be grateful. If they don’t do anything for you - don’t be bitter - accept it.

24. The sooner you get rid of bitterness the better, it will steal a lot from you.

25. Forgive them but don’t forget what they did. You can’t keep repeating the same mistake.

26. Everybody wants something. Your job is to find out and know what they want from you.

27. Get better. The best way to solve your problems is to be bigger than them. Stress is a part of the process of success. Handle it with Grace and maturity.

28. Learn to handle a gun. A man must know how to protect his family.

29. Work on helping yourself first before you expect help from someone else. People love helping winners win. If you look like you are willing to put in enough effort to win, they will help you win.

30. Having money today doesn’t guarantee having money tomorrow. Use your resources wisely. Not having money today doesn’t mean that you will not have it tomorrow. Don’t compromise your integrity for something that can be here today and gone tomorrow, gone today and here again tomorrow. It’s all a game, just learnt to play it without selling your soul.

31. If you add value to others you will make money. Remember the saying: “those who water others will themselves be watered.

32. If you build it, they will come. All you need is a little faith and action.

33. It’s okay to change your mind. You are allowed to have new and fresh perspectives on certain matters. Don’t crucify yourself because of what you believed in yesterday. You can change and grow. Changing and growing is part of life. Don’t let anyone chain you to your past beliefs.

34. Trust the process. Just as a tree takes its time to grow, any area of your life that requires growth will grow, just as long as you keep taking the lessons and using them to water your life.

35. When God is the centre of your life you rest in the confidence that if you take enough action, you will be like him - A MASTER. Every Master has a master. Christ is my master!

36. When change happens, don’t panic and don’t react immediately.
Give things time to realign.
Sometimes they do so on their own. This means: don’t make permanent decisions in temporary emotional states. Your biggest wins come when you hold frame, not when you rush to correct or explain.

The best birthday present you can give me, is telling me how I’ve impacted your life and of those around you.

You can also buy my book It’s More Than Just Money for yourself or a loved one - we are running a birthday special.

Since it’s my Birthday today, and you have read this far; you benefit from our birthday special (my gift to you), you can have it for R300 Including courier for TODAY only; the everyday price is R450. This is a ONE-TIME SPECIAL AND VALID FOR TODAY ONLY.

What’s your take on this?

It’s More Than Just Money

In this last stretch of the year, if you didn’t achieve all your goals, you can at least fight to regain your sanity and peace of mind.

If I had to choose between having everything I have and losing my peace of mind versus having my peace of mind and losing everything, I would choose peace every time.

If your mind is at peace, there is nothing you can lose that you cannot get back. Lost some things? It’s alright. Fight for your peace of mind.

That’s what my mentors drilled into me this year.
If you have your peace of mind, you will gain it all back the same way you got it the first time and more. Protect your peace.

When was the last time you read a book?
Maybe this is the time.

Develop your capacity to think. Thinking is the most important task you can do this coming week. Think really think about where you are and where you want to be. In your thinking, raise your standards. Low standards don’t help anyone. If you’re going to think, you might as well think big.

Get back to your fitness. Exercise. Run, jog, pick up weights. It’s funny how this one thing improves both your mental health and your peace of mind.

When was the last time you prayed to your God whoever your God is? Build a relationship with Him. Ask for spiritual guidance. Let Him lead you into the coming year.

Are you surrounded by quality people?
You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Choose your friends properly. Make a balance sheet of your relationships. Are they assets or liabilities? What value do they bring into your life? What do they take? Is it worth it?

Look after your money. Don’t deliberately let it go by buying things you don’t need to impress people who don’t even like you. Save and invest it. Spend time looking for worthwhile projects to invest in.

Ask yourself
What can I do to add value to people’s lives?
How can I be of value?
What is it that when someone thinks of me they would be willing to pay me for?
