It’s More Than Just Money

I always watch cartoons or animated movies with my daughter. For some reason, she makes me watch one movie 10 times. So, as is our custom, we were watching Sing — not sure if it was one or two.

During the singing competition, they performed a song by Taylor Swift, which has somehow now become my favourite out of all the songs my daughter has taught me.

The name of the song is Shake It Off. I had to sit and learn something from it because there’s no way I can just sit and watch movies without drawing any lessons — especially since the person who makes me watch them won’t take no for an answer.

In that song there’s this part:

Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off (whoo-hoo-hoo)

I draw so many lessons from these words. Don’t hate the player, play the game. But also, players will play, and haters will always hate.

What lessons do I draw? We face opposition daily in our journeys, especially in business. But the trick is this:

The players will keep playing.
The haters will keep hating.
But the winners? They keep moving. They shake it off and build anyway.

What I’ve learned since starting AddProp is that opportunities are everywhere— but not every opportunity is a good one.

We’ve had offers from different players in the market: partnerships, suggestions, even money on the table. But some of those, we’ve simply declined.
