Help! I’m in nearby Dana Point was inspired by your watermelon video and planted a sugarbaby about 6-8 weeks ago. Though the plant has grown considerably and gets plenty of sun, the little fruits just turn brown and shrivel up or fall off. I’ve tried self pollinating with a paint brush, leaving it to the bees to do it, etc. and for some reason none of them have begun to mature. I’ve fertilized as well. I did have them in a bed with pole beans which I just took out so I’m not sure if there was too much nitrogen, but I’m at a complete loss. Help me Cali Kim, you’re my only hope 🤣
First off, I love that Star Wars shoutout 🤣 and how cool you’re growing sugar baby watermelons in Dana Point! What you’re describing sounds a lot like pollination or stress issues. Even with hand pollinating, sometimes if the female flowers don’t get enough pollen, the tiny fruit will start and then shrivel. Heat stress or extra nitrogen (yep, those pole beans may have helped with that!) can also cause the plant to put more energy into leaves and vines instead of fruit.
Now that you’ve cleared out the beans, keep the soil a little on the leaner side with fertilizer—watermelons love a boost of phosphorus and potassium once they start setting fruit. Also, don’t be discouraged; it can take a few tries before one “sticks.” Keep up the hand pollinating in the mornings when flowers are fresh, and you should see success soon.
