Pune International Film Festival PIFF 2026:
New and veteran directors unveil
the stories behind their films..
A mix of new and experienced directors came together to share the stories behind this year’s Marathi films. At the Pune International Film Festival today, PIFF Deputy Director Vishal Shinde interacted with the directors of the films selected for the Marathi Film Competition: Adishesh (Ramesh More), To, Ti Ani Fuji (Mohit Takalkar), Tighi (Jijivisha Kale), Jeev (Ravindra Manik Jadhav), Gondhal (Santosh Davkhar), Gaman (Manoj Naik Satam), and Bapya (Sameer Tiwari).

Director Jijivisha Kale of Tighi said, “My journey began as an assistant on the film Vajandar. Now, after 12 years, my film is releasing as a director. No matter how strong your passion is, if you don’t have the right people with you, your story cannot move forward. In that sense, I have been fortunate to always find good people. That is how I reached here. As an only child, I often felt lonely, and that feeling is what I have expressed through my film.” She added, “The women I have seen in my life will be reflected in my film.”

Mohit Takalkar, director of To, Ti Ani Fuji, said, “I was involved in theatre for a long time, but the idea of making films was always on my mind. Eventually, I decided to make a film. I grew up in a city and had access to many things, yet urban chaos brings with it many questions. Those are the themes that come through my films. Relationships change in urban life, and I have tried to portray that in my current film.”

Ravindra Manik Jadhav, director of Jeev, said, “I work as a teacher in Dhule, but I always had filmmaking in mind. In 2013, I made my first documentary. Using a handycam, I made documentaries like Shalabahya and Nirodh. I knew nothing about how to make films. Later, I made the documentary Thaal Bhankasar on a very small budget, which won a prize of ₹2 lakh. That motivated me to do more work. While writing, someone once shared a memory about Nag Panchami in a school in 2018, and from that, the story of Jeev emerged. My wife stood by me financially, and the film was completed.”

Manoj Naik Satam, director of Gaman, said, “I was a photographer and used to shoot wedding photos. Watching video shoots gradually drew me toward filmmaking. Since childhood, scenes from many films stayed with me. I had a story in mind, which I wrote, and it later became a novel. It was published in 2015 and gave me confidence. That novel was later adapted into a film. Of course, there was no money while making this film. Everything I had was at stake. There were only two options—go mad or sink. I chose to sink. The characters emerged from Konkan itself, and the film was completed.”

Sameer Tiwari, director of Bapya, said, “I am from Uttar Pradesh, but my wife is Marathi, and I wanted to make a film in Marathi. Four years went by searching for a producer. Finally, my wife arranged the funds, and the film was made. Girish Kulkarni helped me, and the story I had in mind came alive. The realities of society that I have observed are reflected in the film.”

Ramesh More, director of Adishesh, said, “I grew up in the slums of Mumbai. I have not formally learned any filmmaking techniques; I learned while making films. I am a student of literature, and my literature teacher gave me confidence. This journey of making films was full of stumbling steps. I spent three and a half years searching for producers. Producers could not understand the difference between a project and a completed film. Finally, a professor stepped forward as a producer.” He added that the experiences during COVID brought out the ‘residue’ (shesh) within us. That idea stayed with him. After reading A. H. Salunke’s book Balivansh, the characters of the story emerged. Artists from Konkan joined the project, and the film was completed.

Santosh Davkhar, director of Gondhal, said, “I have no background in filmmaking. I watched my first film when I was in the 10th standard, and it stayed with me. Later, in 2013, I made my first short film. OTT platforms were rejecting Marathi films, so I felt that the film should be shown to everyone. I read Robert McKee’s book on screenwriting and watched many films, learning along the way. The subject of the film was ‘Gondhal’. I invited many Gondhali performers and listened to their songs. I took a bank loan and completed the film.”
