Today — Thursday, June 25, 2026 — is Nirjala Ekadashi, one of the most sacred and spiritually rewarding fasts in Sanatan Dharma. (Mahakal)
Of all 24 Ekadashis in the Hindu lunar calendar, Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most powerful — observed completely without food or water. The word Nirjala literally means "without water," and that is exactly what sets this fast apart from every other observance in the Vaishnava calendar.
✨ THE STORY BEHIND NIRJALA EKADASHI
Behind this observance sits one of the most honest conversations in all of Puranic
literature. Bhima, the second Pandava — famous across the three worlds for his matchless physical strength — admitted to Sage Veda Vyasa something no warrior easily admits: that he could not fast. (Hindu Mirror)
Vyasa listened without judgment and revealed that one single Ekadashi, observed completely and without compromise, would carry the full merit of all 24. That Ekadashi was Nirjala. (Hindu Mirror) This is why it is also lovingly called Bhimseni Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi.

🙏 FASTING RULES
Unlike other Ekadashi fasts that allow fruits and milk, the Nirjala Ekadashi fast must be observed from sunrise to the next sunrise — a complete 24 hours without food and water. During the fast, devotees should engage only in devotional practices, scripture recitation, and chanting of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. (Gupt Vrindavan Dham)
Charity (daan) is also a key part of the day — especially donating water, food, and seasonal items. (OneIndia)
For those with health conditions, pregnancy, or old age — a lighter phalahar (fruit-based) fast is permitted with sincerity.
🌸 HOW TO BREAK THE FAST (Parana)
When the Parana time begins on June 26, first offer bhog to the Lord — fruits, Tulsi leaves, and water. Afterwards, distribute prasadam to family members. While breaking your own fast, first take a few sips of holy water, then eat fruits followed by light sattvic prasadam.
💫 SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE
According to Hindu scriptures, observing this single Ekadashi with sincerity bestows the immense spiritual merit equivalent to observing all twenty-four Ekadashis of the year — removing sins accumulated over many births and bringing peace, prosperity, and divine blessings of Lord Vishnu.
