Northern elephant seals were captured on video at an ONC NEPTUNE observatory site for nearly a year using sonar as a dinner bell to find their fishy feast, a new study published in PLOS ONE reveals.

Our Folger Deep hydrophone picked up this unusual orca vocalization event on March 13, 2023 by a group of Bigg's orca whales (aka Transient Orcas)! Usually silent to avoid alerting their prey, this group was calling for over 1 hr!
Biggs have stereotyped calls but the recording showed they were using highly modified vocalizations. These “aberrant” calls are associated with socialization in resident orcas - we are not sure what this means for Bigg’s orcas!
