I heard my stepmother's whispers through the thin mud walls, telling my father she would kill us if he didn’t leave us. I didn’t know how real it was until the day it happened.

We lived in a small village near the river. My mother died when I was 10, and soon after, my father remarried. I had two younger sisters, and things were hard, but we managed. Then he brought her into the house. Her name was Nana. She was kind to us in the beginning, but that didn’t last long.

At first, it was just small things. She’d take our food, say we didn’t deserve to eat as much as her children. She’d leave us to do all the chores while her children sat in the shade. We didn’t complain. It wasn’t that bad. But then, strange things started happening.

At night, when I lay in bed, I heard her muttering strange words. At first, I thought she was praying, but the sounds were... wrong. Her voice would drop to this low growl, and it sounded like there were two people in the room. But when I peeked through the doorway, it was just her sitting alone, rocking back and forth in the dark.

One night, my father came home late from the fields, and I overheard them arguing. She told him he should leave us, his daughters, in the bush. “They’re cursed,” she said. “They’ll bring nothing but ruin to you. Take them far into the forest. Let them die there, or I will.”

I couldn’t sleep after that. Every rustle of leaves outside our hut, every snap of a twig, made me jump. My father didn’t seem to believe her, but Nana was patient. She’d say it again and again, day after day, until he started to believe her lies.

Then one day, I came home from fetching water, and my sisters were gone.

Nana said they’d gone to visit a relative in the next village. But I knew something was wrong. They didn’t take their things. The mat where they slept was still on the floor, untouched. I asked her where they were, and she just smiled, this cold smile, and said, “They’re where they belong.”

That night, I waited until she and my father were asleep, and I snuck out. I followed the path through the forest, the one Nana always told us never to take. I walked for hours, my feet sore and bleeding. The further I went, the quieter everything got. Even the animals were silent, like they knew something I didn’t.

Then I found them.

My sisters, lying side by side in the dirt, their eyes open but seeing nothing. Their faces were twisted in terror, mouths frozen in silent screams. I tried to shake them awake, but their bodies were cold. Cold like the river in the early mornings.

I screamed, but no one came.

I ran back home. I wanted to tell my father, but when I opened my mouth, no sound came out. I stood there, shaking, pointing in the direction of the forest. He didn’t understand, and Nana just watched me, her eyes glowing in the dark, like she knew everything.

That night, my father disappeared.

Some say he left the village, ashamed of losing his daughters. Others say Nana did something to him, something dark and twisted. I never found out. But I stayed. I had nowhere else to go.

Nana never touched me after that. She didn’t need to. Every night, I hear her whispers, her chanting. And I know she’s waiting. Waiting for me to break. Waiting for the day when no one will remember that I ever lived.

But I won’t leave. I can’t. Because if I do, she’ll win.

And I can’t let her win.
