I have been interested in cults and dictatorships since the 80s when I was an exchange student in Sweden and would listen to the hilariously inept Soviet propaganda of Radio Moscow on shortwave radio.
Then I went to East Berlin many times and made friends with anti-government dissidents there. I learned how the communist East German government controlled people through fear and bribes.
I am fascinated by Scientology because of its parallels to all dictatorships and mind control systems.
