šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µšŸ’– Last weekend was Valentine’s Day — another cultural moment that’s widely recognized here in Japan, though celebrated a little differently than in many other countries. It reminded me how many unique traditions shape the rhythm of the year in Japan, and it inspired me to start creating a BeGloby cultural calendar that highlights all the key events you’ll see throughout the seasons.

šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µšŸ»āœØ But before we dive into that… let me take you back to our big event from the weekend: my department’s shinnenkai, Japan’s traditional New Year’s party. It’s one of those moments where colleagues come together to celebrate a fresh start, enjoy good food and drinks, play games, win prizes, and end the night with the iconic ippon‑jime — one powerful clap to seal our wishes for the year.

I put together a mini vlog so you can experience the atmosphere with me.

More cultural moments — and the full calendar — coming soon.

šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µšŸ‘¹Today is ā€šSetsubunā€˜ - the ritual of ā€žwelcoming springā€œ by chasing away bad luck.

In supermarkets, shelves have been overflowing with oni masks, roasted soybeans and giant ehimaki rolls.

Kids left Kindergarten proudly wearing their colorful oni masks crafted in Kindergarten and ready for the main action.

Mame-Maki

Throwing beans at the oni shouting ā€žOni wa Soto! Fuku wa Uchi!ā€œ to send the demons out and invite good fortune in.

2026 - gambarimashou! šŸ’ŖāœØ

Joining a ā€žBusiness New Yearā€˜s Prayerā€œ at Meiji Jingu Mae with my colleagues was another wonderful experience in Japan and a great way to ring in the new year at work, even though itā€˜s already a few days old.

Happy New Year šŸŽ‰šŸŽšŸŽ

While the New Year’s Merch has disappeared from stores, some decorations are still up. See more New Year’s Traditions in Japan here: https://youtu.be/3e4-9p-CLSE

Our New Year’s Greetings have been delivered collected in one badge. youtube.com/shorts/_5hlglL_pX...

Children engaged in mochi pounding events in Kindergarten this week and brought some home. Mochitsuki is a vital part of Japanese New Year (Oshogatsu) preparations, symbolizing prosperity, good health, and long life.

It’s the year of the (Fire) Horse and I’m excited to see what it will bring.

šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µāœØAnother beautiful moment of cultural discovery in Japan… I had the pleasure of organizing and participating in the opening ceremony for a new building at work. What you can see here is part of the purification and safety prayer but it had many other elements to it. Planning a full video on it so stay tuned.

I’m so excited!

It’s been about 3 years since I witnessed this wedding at Meiji Jingu Shrine as a visitor to the shrine. youtube.com/shorts/YVPuSb6Xap...

Tomorrow I’ll be attending a wedding at the shrine. We received a while rule book for the ceremony and will most likely not be allowed to take pictures/video but I’ll find a way to share the experience.

Just started re-reading ā€šThe Culture Mapā€˜. It’s a great way for anyone looking to start their intercultural journey as it’s a very easy and entertaining read, I find. Do you know the book and have you read it?

I’ve been able to spend some time in Germany recently after not having been there for a while. So you might see some Germany impressions in between more from and about Japan. Happy holiday season to the ones celebrating!
